I was at the march this weekend and could not have been prouder to be a part of it. It is incredibly important for people to unite when confronted with outrageous injustice, something which hundreds of thousands of Americans did this past weekend.

What will stay with me the most, and what I will carry with me as I continue to speak out for LGBT rights, is the sight of couples who have been waiting for their equal share of the American dream for more than 40 years, fighting and waiting for the government to recognize them as equal citizens under the law for longer than I have been alive. I cannot imagine what it must feel like to spend that length of time fighting for what is right and true and seeing so little real progress. I can only hope that I will never have to, as they, and I, are tired of waiting for true equality in this nation. I find it absolutely criminal that a supposedly democratic government would try to ignore the existence and value of such love by leaving it unprotected, and will continue to fight until it is.

As Emerson says, “Slowly, slowly the Avenger comes, but comes surely.”

I am in my mid-forties and in my life I have been gay-bashed, called names, fired because I am gay and continue to have my family “pray for me”. This is the first time that I have gone to a big march or ever been in D.C. I found it to be touching, inspiring, joyous and over-awing. These feelings will continue to fuel my desire for nothing less than full equality.

This new generation of activists in their teens and twenties makes my heart soar. They are full of hope and enthusiasm and haven’t had the dream of equality crushed by decades of hatred and ignorance. They have renewed MY hope and enthusiasm.

I feel that we are truly on the precipice of great things happening. Finally.

I recently read an article in The Economist regarding rights for gays and Obama. It’s shocking how many people left comments saying that gays really just need to wait. How long are we supposed to wait?
