Heteroflexible Women

posted by Jess at 9:52 am.

On Monday, I had the wonderful opportunity to breathe the same air sex columnist Dan Savage was. Savage was in town to answer some questions regarding sex. During said intimate exchange, he answered a question that an anonymous individual from the audience posed. The individual wanted to know if there is a such thing as bisexual women. He (and some audience members) answered with an emphatic yes and proceeded to explain why. Savage said that women’s sexuality was more fluid than that of men. He went on to say much more about the subject, but my thoughts quickly whisked me away to a related topic: heteroflexibility.

One of my lady friends, who we shall call Amsterdam, is dating a young man and, as far as I know, she has only dated men. She and her gentleman have agreed to be exclusive in their relationship…kind of. She told him that she won’t see other people, but she wants room to be with women. He agreed to the sexy exception. Interestingly, she told me that she was a bit frustrated because she wasn’t sure if he really understood what she was saying. She might sleep with other women but would he consider that cheating? Why am I telling you this story? Because Amsterdam would be what my friends and I call heteroflexible.

Who is a heteroflexible person, you ask? S/He is someone who society would probably deem “straight”/heterosexual, yet behind closed doors they would be willing to do some stuff with the same sex. I’m not really sure how it differs from bisexuality but I see it as a way to break out of the either/or categories. And as one of the queer people able to take advantage of such radicalism (I really enjoy making out) I am ALL for it. As a matter of fact, I’m probably too obvious with how much I enjoy watching my “straight” lady friends make out. I have the same sexy gaze as the lady in the purple…

I have sexy friends. Period. And there are many of them who I wouldn’t mind hopping into the sack with for some rough three-on-one wrestling. Some of said sexy friends identify themselves as being straight-ish. When I first heard of this, I thought they just meant that they would do some sexy stuff with other ladies for the attention of men. As a result, I internally rolled my eyes at their claim for such an identity…until I made out with them. I noticed that they were surprisingly comfortable with letting me fondle and tongue bang them whether a gentleman was there or not. After encounter such magnificent creatures, my perspective on sexuality and sensuality has changed quite a bit. I’m willing to continue challenging my perspective on women’s sexuality by doing more visual research.
