Howdy,
As you probably noticed in my last review I dig Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I didn’t really explain myself as to why it was so great…so here it is! Forgetting Sarah Marshall is an hilarious comedy, which gets extra points for superb comedic timing, stellar acting and an its overall cheerful disposition.
Now it’s hard to tell whether this is ‘comedy’ or a ‘romantic comedy’; after all, each has different connotations.
“one being a something actually watchable the latter being a chick-flick”
After careful analysis I think I will come to answer on this genre issue.
This is not a blue plate special
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is about a dowdy musical composer (for a CSI/Law and Order parody) named Peter Bretter. His girlfriend (Sarah Marshall) is the main actresses to that show and the two have been dating for over 5 years. That’s when the bad news comes…
“During a scene where we see penis over 9 times! But who’s counting right?”
as we find out Sarah Marshall wants to break up with Peter. Behind Peter’s back, Sarah has been dating teen heartthrob Aldous Snow—a British sensation and a ‘devil in the sack’. This sends Peter off the back end, he cries and cries….and cries, and then he decides to get back at her by having crazy sex.
“if you haven’t seen this yet I implore you to watch this scene between Peter and this black chick in bed it is hilarious.”
After all that Peter’s stepbrother, Brian Bretter, decides it would be best if Peter went away for a while. To forget Marshall, he goes to Hawaii, where, immediately, he bumps into…Marshall and her hot boyfriend of course! Hilarity ensues, Peter lifts his spirits while Sarah gets her comeuppance, when Peter meets Rachel Jansen and they have ‘some fun.’ I wont ruin the ending for those who haven’t seen it—but go see it or I will!
I was in the pool!
With all the dick jokes, male introspection, and two dimensional women characters, it’s not surprising that this film was made for men by men (FMBM trademark pending). Apatow Productions is the backer behind the film, Nicholas Stoller directing and Judd Apatow producing. Once you know that, you can tell…this is very much in the same light as 40 Year Old Virgin and Superbad. That’s not to say that this isn’t its own movie, the women characters are more developed than in those two and the plot has more to do with gaining something lost, than gaining something never had (virginity loss).
The only thing that rubs me the wrong way here is the fact that this is a romantic comedy. Towards the end of the film, it is increasingly obvious that it is, because of the predictability of all romantic comedies.
“the man gets his babe in the end”
Oh well, that’s their pitch and I caught it and so should all of you. Judd Apatow is still firing on all cylinders and so is his ever expanding ensemble of (mainly) young male actors.
Now it’s time for a plot involving a married couple or more developed women characters!

the way they captured peter naked was hilarious. the editing techniques seemed to move the camera ever harshly in sync with the swaying of peter’s…er… junk.
