Moby Announces New Album “Wait For Me”

posted by Justin at 9:27 am.

-Mute Records

Mute is set to release Moby’s new album ‘Wait For Me’ on June 30th. The video for the album’s debut track, ‘Shot In The Back Of The Head’, is an animation directed by David Lynch. Watch it here.

A completely DIY effort, Moby recorded the album in his home studio, drew the album artwork with a black sharpie on copy paper, asked his friends to record the vocals, and asked another friend, photographer Jessica Dimmock, to take the press photos.

In addition, friend Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Throbbing Gristle, M83) came on board to help mix the record: “mixing the record with him was really nice, as he’s creatively open to trying anything - like recording an old broken bakelite radio and running it through some broken old effects pedals to see what it would sound like. it’s on the record as a :45 second long track called ’stock radio’“. Moby and Thomas mixed the record using purely analog equipment in true stereo, akin to how records were mixed in the late 60’s. As a result, the songs sound pretty amazing on headphones.

On Wednesday April 15th a free download of “Shot in the Back of the Head” will be available on Moby’s website at www.moby.com.

Cool.

Why Moby still rules

posted by Justin at 1:41 pm.

Somewhere along the line I think most of us, including myself, had forgotten about our hero Moby. Moby, that legendary 90’s down-tempo producer, vegetarian, scientologist, self-proclaimed celibate, and environmentalist, released a new album earlier this year. Who knew? Thank god for Mute records! Last month I received a copy of his latest release ‘Last Night’. And it has really been on repeat, playing in the background whenever I need some noise, blasting in my car, or blaring probably too loud in my headphones, ever since.

The album has a little something for everyone. Its got his classic smooth down-tempo jams like the opener ‘Ooh Yeah’. The layering here is just awesome. If you don’t find yourself tapping your foot or humming, there is probably something wrong with you. Moby writes in the album sleeve how the record is a return to the New York dance scene he was surrounded by in his youth. He writes about sneaking out with his friends and taking a train into the city, dancing all night long with his friends, then getting home just in time to go to high school. The 90’s house influence is not hard to notice. Whatever you want to call it, sampled house, filtered house, disco house, Moby was in the middle of it and all those influences come together in tracks like ‘The Stars’ and ‘Everyday It’s 1989′.

Probably the most danceable Moby record in recent releases, I think it would be hard to find someone opposed to dancing to any of these tracks. Thank god, Last Night is not a full on, big beat, banger-esque dance CD. This is more back to the basics. Back to the loops and the sampling that Moby grew up with. This is house music. That wonderfully awesome genre that most people love to hate, but in reality has influenced so much current music that it is tough not to see the influence in anything that’s popular.

Last Night is a breath of fresh air. Really go check it out. It does not disappoint and just leave you wanting more. There’s really a diverse collection of songs on the record, so you will quickly find the ones you like and the ones you don’t. Regardless, it still flows insanely well. Do not miss this release.
