Remix Wednesday #1

posted by Justin at 4:40 pm.

I promised I would post these yesterday, but I got tied up with stuff. So we can make Wednesday the remix day. I’ll try to post a handful of tracks I’m into, every Wednesday, right here. Tell me what you think, what you’re favorites are, or what you hate. This week I am really digging the Boys Noize ‘Lights and Music’ remix. I am a little behind on this one - its been around for awhile, but definitely check it out. Also the Justice remix of ‘Electric Feel’ is out in full glory now. The horns and Fx make the track. Watch for the breakdown at the end. And if there’s any other Cut Copy fans in the house, the ‘Far Away’ remix is great, but it’s kind of a rip-off of what Boys Noize did.

Moby - I Love To move in Here (Crookers Crack Mix)
Cut Copy - Lights And Music (Boys Noize Happy Birthday Remix)
MGMT - Electric Feel (Justice Remix)
Cut Copy - Far Away (Solly remix)
The Ting Tings - Shut Up and Let Me Go (CLASSIXX REMIXX)
Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes (Herve Remix)
Ercola - Follow Me (ft. Annie) (Lifelike Remix)
Cut Copy - Hearts On Fire (Kimono Kops Remix)
Yelle - Ce Jeu (The Twelves Remix)
Yuksek - composer (surkin rmx)

Favorite DJ: Lifelike

posted by Justin at 1:14 pm.

Lifelike delivers. Hands down. With every remix, every new track, every monthly mix, this French music master brings the beats that only take one listen to appreciate. His explosive house hit Discopolis was one of the biggest selling dance anthems in 2005/2006. Last year I stumbled upon a track by him that instantly became, still to this date, probably my favorite dance song. ‘So Electric’, released in 2007 around the time I ran across it, is a mastery of epic synths and building beats. It is sure to get any one, any house, any club crazy. It’s suave, laid back energy will hypnotize you, get your head bobbing and feat groovin’. One of my favorite tracks here, ever!

Lifelike has been busy since his 2007 hit ‘So Electric’. There have been remixes of Dk7, Super Mal, Chromeo, The Presets, and recently dropped one of Cazal’s ‘Somebody Somewhere’ on Kitsuné (Pairs).

Check these tracks:

Lifelike - So Electric
Lifelike & Kris Menace - Discopolis
Chromeo - Needy Girl (Lifelike Remix)
Cazals - Somebody,Somewhere(LIFELIKE Remix)

Black Monk Time (1966)

posted by Justin at 2:09 pm.

Monk

1. “Monk Time” – 2:42
2. “Shut Up” – 3:11
3. “Boys Are Boys and Girls Are Choice” – 1:23
4. “Higgle-Dy-Piggle-Dy” – 2:28
5. “I Hate You” – 3:32
6. “Oh, How to Do Now” – 3:14
7. “Complication” – 2:21
8. “We Do Wie Du” – 2:09
9. “Drunken Maria” – 1:44
10. “Love Came Tumblin’ Down” – 2:28
11. “Blast Off!” – 2:12
12. “That’s My Girl” – 2:24

Don’t ask me how I cam across this band, but according to iTunes some 6 months ago I imported a song ‘Love Came Tumblin’ Down‘ by The Monks. Over Christmas break I really got into 60’s instrumental/surf rock bands: The Tornados, The Shadows, etc. Ever since, I’ve been beginning to obsess with the idea of creating an entirely rhythmical, instrumental-based band you could get kids our age to dig (ie. dance to). Well, two weeks ago I came across the Monks song again for the 4th or 5th time, and was immediately overcome with this crazed vision because this was basically the sound i was imagining.

Crystal Castles: “Vanished”

posted by Justin at 9:36 pm.

CC

The first official CC debut isn’t slated to drop until March 18, but we all know how much those dates mean. I never really gave CC much of a listen - I knew they were popular and I had a couple songs, but it was never an obsession. After giving the album a couple listens, I give it a fair grade but the song “Vanished” definitely sticks out in my eyes. Basically it’s a remix of the Van She song ‘Sex City’ (i.e. Vanished). (See Van She). The song is catchy and reworked in an awesome way.

For those of you who don’t know CC sound, they removed the chip from an Atari 5200 and placed it inside a keyboard. Overlaying those gameboy beeps with a drum machine and some distorted vocals, you basically get CC. Some of the trash music is too much in my eyes, but smart electronica is hard to dislike.

“New” Van She

posted by Justin at 4:53 pm.

The Australian music scene is maxxed out with electronica. With Cut Copy’s sophomore release imminent, Midnight Juggernauts planning their debut for later this year, and now Van She publicizing ‘Cat & the Eye‘, get ready for Australia to beat France in this blogowar. ‘Cat & the Eye’ was posted on Van She’s website last year, but it’s finally out in physical form now. No information on a US release, but I am sure it will either be on iTunes or easily found on the internet.

Imo, Van She produced one of the best songs of the past couple years, ‘Kelly‘ back in 2005. I still listen to it a couple times a week. If your ready for the coolest thing ever, check below.

Be sure to listen to their new single too, although I don’t think they’ll ever top Kelly.

Gui Boratto

posted by Justin at 5:55 pm.

This track was recently given to me by a certain special someone over the weekend, and it’s just too great not to share. I swear I’ve heard this before at a party maybe, it just sounds to familiar and cool. Anyway the track is “Beautiful Life” by Gui Boratto. I looked him up and he’s a 34 year old Brazilian DJ and electronic music producer. This track hails from his 2007 release “Chromophobia”, around the beginning of the year last year. There’s a link below to his website/myspace.

My suggestion: Plug this song in to some big speakers with lots of bass and just zone out for 8 minutes. Yes, it is long but builds so well and it’s worth the pay off. Definitely check this out.

(btw, Im sorry Ashish).

Felix Cartal

Felix Cartal @ myspace

Cartal’s newest track, Vancouver is yet another catchy, bass driven dance tune, but to me it feels like something new. It has been on repeat on my computer most of the week, which probably wasn’t good for finals studying, but I’m pretty sure I raked in all those As and Bs. *cross fingers* Felix Cartal is another dj out of France getting big thanks to blogging, etc.

Missingtoof summed this up nicely: “Cartal is a child of France but his affinity for his second home, Canada is strong. In his newest work, Felix Cartal pays homage to the city where he lived and partied and was undoubtedly inspired. The track is ‘Vancouver’, which bookends his previous track, ‘Montreal Dreams’.”

Check below for the music. If you’re feeling extra intense, listen to ‘Drugs’. I included his remix of MSTRKFT’s ‘The Looks’.

Go here to access his myspace, but be warned don’t click on his band website.

bgebs (Brittany) recently started a blog detailing her life and ramblings in the CU. At omgdidyouhearabout, you’ll find the latest dishes on her love of sparks and djs, her escapades in London, and of course graphs detailing which bars she attends (100% Murphys). Since the blog has gone live, just under two weeks ago it has gotten already over 3600 hits. It has shown up on a Craigslist in San Francisco and is the current talk amongst my friends. Imo, it’s hilarious and a great read. She posts a couple times a day and it’s always a satisfying read. Below you’ll find a small IM interview today and don’t miss the remixes at the bottom.

Cut / Copy

posted by Justin at 2:45 pm.

Cut Copy

Probably one of my favorite bands, Cut Copy has ruled the electronic/rock scene since 2004 with their debut release of Bight Like Neon Love. Ever since then they have road pretty low on the radar. The trio is from Australia and is working with Tim Goldsworthy from DFA on their followup album due out in February 2008. The first two singles of the upcoming album, In Ghost Colours, have been ‘Hearts on Fire’ and ‘So Haunted’. These tracks are both great in my eyes, but I think it’s time to spread the wealth off the first album.
