The Lipsyncs EP

posted by Justin at 10:07 pm.

The Lipsyncs new EP “For You” dropped in my inbox earlier this week, but I just recently got around to listening to it. I confess though, I did immediately open it and listen to the tracks, but only for a short while because I needed to get back to studying. However! The studying is over and this EP desperately needs to be talked about.

The Lipsyncs is a side project of Sebastien Kenzy out of Amsterdam. The kid is producing some really great house music, and it’s not simply your generic club stuff that’s everywhere, it’s got some soul. The beats and disco samples are extremely solid and will give you every intention to start dancing in your bedroom. Disco house is starting to seep into a lot of popular music, but this is true disco house: sampled and filtered, moving, undeniably cool. But where Sebastien really excels is in the bass. This kid has some bass lines that rival anything I’ve heard in a long time.

Don’t be afraid to add The Lipsyncs on Myspace and show him some love. He gave me the all clear to post a download link, so download!

Why Moby still rules

posted by Justin at 1:41 pm.

Somewhere along the line I think most of us, including myself, had forgotten about our hero Moby. Moby, that legendary 90’s down-tempo producer, vegetarian, scientologist, self-proclaimed celibate, and environmentalist, released a new album earlier this year. Who knew? Thank god for Mute records! Last month I received a copy of his latest release ‘Last Night’. And it has really been on repeat, playing in the background whenever I need some noise, blasting in my car, or blaring probably too loud in my headphones, ever since.

The album has a little something for everyone. Its got his classic smooth down-tempo jams like the opener ‘Ooh Yeah’. The layering here is just awesome. If you don’t find yourself tapping your foot or humming, there is probably something wrong with you. Moby writes in the album sleeve how the record is a return to the New York dance scene he was surrounded by in his youth. He writes about sneaking out with his friends and taking a train into the city, dancing all night long with his friends, then getting home just in time to go to high school. The 90’s house influence is not hard to notice. Whatever you want to call it, sampled house, filtered house, disco house, Moby was in the middle of it and all those influences come together in tracks like ‘The Stars’ and ‘Everyday It’s 1989′.

Probably the most danceable Moby record in recent releases, I think it would be hard to find someone opposed to dancing to any of these tracks. Thank god, Last Night is not a full on, big beat, banger-esque dance CD. This is more back to the basics. Back to the loops and the sampling that Moby grew up with. This is house music. That wonderfully awesome genre that most people love to hate, but in reality has influenced so much current music that it is tough not to see the influence in anything that’s popular.

Last Night is a breath of fresh air. Really go check it out. It does not disappoint and just leave you wanting more. There’s really a diverse collection of songs on the record, so you will quickly find the ones you like and the ones you don’t. Regardless, it still flows insanely well. Do not miss this release.

December update

posted by Justin at 11:08 pm.

How’s everyone doing? I can’t believe the semester is coming to a close already. Got some cool things lined up for the blog in the coming weeks including a recap on the ‘Big in 08′ post I made back in March, a best Artists and albums of the year list, and once the new year gets close a new list of artists to watch for 2009. And hopefully tons of posts on new artists. I will be leaving for Norway in January to study in Oslo for the semester but I am going to try to keep the blog updated while I am away. Hopefully I run across tons of cool music. Also for those lone individuals out there who have been missing their remixes, Remix Wednesday will return this week! AH! Haha, I should have that up soon.

Good luck with finals y’all. If you’re feeling stressed either listen to “Barbara Ann” by the Beach Boys or this:
