This week on PGU: We’re getting revolutionary!

posted by Lambo at 1:10 pm.

As the 232nd birthday of this great nation approaches, WPGU is out to start a ruckus with our oldest rivals, the British. We’re waging a war on the air waves this week as we pit American bands against their British counterparts in a series of battles for total musical domination. In this contest, there are no winners and there is no prize. That is, unless you count patriotism and and excellent sense of what’s awesome as prizes, in which case everybody wins!

Want to join in on the good fight? Tune in every day through Friday, July 4th at 12:30 and 5:30 as we spin the songs from the opposing artists, then log on to the217.com/wpgu to vote on which song was better. Polls will only be open for 3 hours, so log on quick! As they say in Chicago, vote early, vote often!

Also this week at WPGU:

  • We’re playing Glow-in-the-dark Ultimate Frisbee on the South Quad as part of our ongoing Summer Twilight Games! Come out to the South Quad on Wednesday at 8pm to join in the fun.
  • WPGU is cleaning out it’s prize closet and giving you a chance to pick up some cool free stuff at an undisclosed location. Tune in on Thursday to find out where the WPGU van will be as part of our Mobile Garage Giveaway, then come find us to get cool free stuff, including CD’s, t-shirts, and the random crap that makes us cool to know!
  • Artist Carl Hauck is being featured as our Band of the Week. Tune every day at 4:30 to hear a new track by this awesome musician!

That’s where we’re at for this patriotic week. Be sure to tune in as you celebrate the birth of something awesome.

AMERICA!

This week at WPGU: Capture something special!

posted by Lambo at 5:50 pm.

What a week for rockin music and fun in the sun! WPGU is rolling into another summer week with a lot of exciting events and some cool programming, too!

  • First off, our Twilight Game this week is going to be Capture the Flag! This Risky ritual (pun intended) of awesomeness and espionage will take place on the South Quad at 8PM and feature two teams, two flags, and a lot of good times.
  • Next off, this week is the last week to enter the WPGU Be the DJ Contest! Want to show us how it’s done? Think you’ve got better music than we do? email your summer-themed iTunes playlist to bethedj@wpgu.com or drop it off at our studios before Friday at noon.
  • On Ticket Tuesday this week, we’re giving away 5 pairs of tickets to Little Pieces with New Ruins on Sunday, June 22! The show will be held at The High Dive, and looks to be an awesome good time!
  • SPEAKING OF NEW RUINS… They are this week’s WPGU Band of the Week! Tune in at 4:30 every day this week for your chance to hear a new track by this awesome band!
  • And finally, be sure to check out the WPGU booth at Taste of Champaign-Urbana this weekend, as we will be out there with fun, games, and some cool swag throughout the weekend!
  • We’ve got a long week ahead of us with a lot to do, but it looks to be a good time for all who attend!

    Peace.

Now featured on WPGU: Band of the week!

posted by Lambo at 4:19 pm.

This week marks a U-turn at WPGU. No longer will we simply play the best and brightest on the local music scene. We will also get to know them. We’re going out to dinner and ordering the proverbial lobster! And we’re doing it to make sure that you know them, too! These are to bands that are hot, and we want you to know what’s making them sizzle.

In the case of Snowsera, our inaugural Band of the Week, it was their impressive showing at the Local Music Awards. With two trophies and a live performance, they had one helluva night even after the rest of us blacked out. They’re down to Earth and pretty good to see perform, and definitely deserve all the credit we can give them.

To honor them, this week we will feature a new Snowsera song in the 4 o’clock hour every day, along with interesting tidbits about the band all day long and a live studio interview on WPGU 107.1FM at the end of the week. So tune in to hear it or log on to the217.com to read our full questionnaire with the band today!

    Also this week:

    • WPGU will be at the new Presby Hall on Thursday to give away sweet prizes and show off some of Campustown’s nicest new housing
    • Ticket Tuesday will be a double feature with tickets to both Islands and John Vandrslice live at Canopy Club
