My first time…

posted by The Mad Hatter at 5:45 pm.

So this is my first blog I figured start simple, don’t get too off the wall till next week…

Status: Fantastic

Music Thoughts: Music is pretty grand, just in general, if you haven’t gotten tickets to girl talk yet, try and win them, if your luck runs dry and you don’t pay ridiculous craigslist resale prices, I am truly sorry. Although I may use to many commas, I feel the pause in speech or press is as monumental as in a great guitar solo or raging tune, the pause should be celebrated. Girl Talk has the opportunity to be quite epic.

This Week: It’s been swell, done with exams and ready to pound some pints with everyone at Firehaus tomorrow from 11pm-1am for Halloween!

Next Week: Watch out because next week will blow your mind.

New Adds (10/27 - 11/2)

posted by Matt Klomp at 3:10 pm.

Witches, Pumpkins, Ghosts, and Unicorns. Here are the spookiest new hits to listen for:

Oasis - “Shock of the Lightning” - Miss the ‘Morning Glory’ Oasis? Ah, the days when the Gallagher brothers were still drunkenly assaulting each other with cricket bats and breaking up on stage.. simpler times. Well, this new single is about as close as we’re going to get to having that same infectious, driving rock sound that you can still sing along to from those days of yore. “Love is a time machine,” indeed.

Chairlift - “Bruises” - Check out the latest “Apple commercial song” by Brooklyn-based electo-pop band Chairlift. Good luck trying to get this one out of your head. Chalk up another Hip-Indie Cred point for Apple.

Joe Pug - “Hymn 101” - Chicago’s own Joe Pug won me over immediately with the sincerity in his very distinctive voice. Pug has some definite Dylan vibes about his music, but he still manages to keep his songs interesting and inviting. Sometimes all you need for a great song is an acoustic guitar and a story to tell.

El dia de la santa?

posted by Liz Rush at 12:12 pm.

Tune in to WPGU today to win tickets for:

Santa at the Canopy Club!!!!

The show is November 1st with special guests:

Butterfly Assassins, Pomegranates, John Hardy & The Public and The Names That Spell

But seriously guys, really check out this show. Not only is Santa our WPGU Band of the Week, but the other bands on the bill are up-and-coming in their own right. In fact, Butterfly Assassins were BOTW about a month ago.

As a final thought, this Santa show is one of MANY Canopy Club shows that are blowing my mind this semester. Wednesday, they’re hosting Atmosphere, Abstract Rude, and Blueprint. Atmosphere visited Canopy last year and it still tops my “favorite concerts of all time” list. Today, our very own Agent Mos is interviewing Slug from Atmosphere at 1 pm.

IF YOU LOVE MUSIC, CHECK OUT WHAT’S GOING ON AT CANOPY.

New Adds (10/20-10/26)

posted by Matt Klomp at 2:04 pm.

Here’s what to listen for this week!

headphones-baby.jpg

Shugo Tokumaru - “Parachute” - This song really has a strange magic about it. The steady, quick fluttering of the acoustic guitar behind Tokumaru’s voice is not only very unique and (to put it plainly) cool, I think it’s the perfect kind of music to ease us all into the upcoming colder months.

Matt and Kim - “Daylight” - Look for this Brooklyn-based duo’s new album, Grand, to be released in the near future. These guys will also be playing in Chicago in mid-November - don’t forget your dancing shoes.

Also:
Spinto Band - “Vivian, Don’t”
Grampall Jookabox - “The Girl Ain’t Preggers”

New Adds (10/13-10/19)

posted by Matt Klomp at 2:18 pm.

Check out these superfresh jams on WPGU:

cat-and-gramophone.jpg

Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s - “As Tall As Cliffs” - If you’ve had a chance to see these guys play around town over the last couple of years, you probably won’t find it surprising that this band has continued its steady rise into radar prevalence. I think this song comes from the same vein as a lot of Shins stuff, except it’s a lot busier with the amount of instruments being played. Despite all that’s going on in this one, it’s really catchy right from the start.

Land of Talk - “Some are Lakes”
- If you’ve got tickets for this Sunday’s Broken Social Scene show at Foellinger Auditorium, be sure to make it to the venue on time to see this band. They’ve definitely got a similar to sound to a lot of the other (what seems like) hundred bands that have spewed out of Montreal over the last couple of years, but I’m a big sucker for lead singer Elizabeth Powell’s voice.

Also listen for:

Fujiya and Miyagi - “Sore Thumb”
Cold War Kids - “I’ve Seen Enough”
Kings of Leon - “Sex on Fire”
Of Montreal - “Id Engager”

One Republic at Assembly Hall…

posted by Liz Rush at 12:01 pm.

Today is once again… TICKET TUESDAY!

This week we’re switching it up a little and giving away tickets to One Republic at Assembly Hall. The show is October 27 at 7pm, and looks like a pretty good way to get your Halloween weekend off to the right start. Tune in all day today!

Some things on my radar this week at WPGU—

Listen to Missy Higgins! We just did an in-studio interview with her and she blew us all away. In fact, most of us went to her Canopy show last night.

Illini Hockey! There’s a game this Friday and we’re broadcasting live at the ice arena! We’re so good. You gotta love a win here and there.

Have a sweet day, see you at 3pm!
