This week on PGU: We’re out there, come and get some!

posted by Lambo at 1:21 pm.

This week(and every week, really), PGU is working hard to be all up in your grill! We will be out and about in a lot of fun ways, working to ensure that your Summer doesn’t suck and your life is made just a bit more awesome!

  • First off, we’re spending Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 2PM out in the world, taking your requests! Check us out at IUB on the corner of Wright and Daniels as we offer up WPGU “Quickies on the Quad!” Yes… we know we’re just off the quad, but the sentiment is still there, plus our rock and roll sound can be heard all the way at Foellinger, so it counts! Stop on by for free stuff and to get your requests on the air, courtesy Illini Apple Center.
  • On Thursday, we’re going to be driving around, giving away the cool stuff that we don’t want anymore in our first ever WPGU Mobile Garage Giveaway! From CD’s and Frisbees to PGU party beads and shot glasses, we’re doing a little spring cleaning in the middle of summer, and our trash can be your treasure! TUne in to PGU from 5-7PM to find out where we’ll be, then come on out for your chance to get some cool free stuff!
  • Finally, on Friday, WPGU is getting wet & wild as we wash cars at Capstone Quarters, near I-74 on Lincoln Ave in Urbana! Stop on by for a free wash on us!

This week on PGU: We’re getting revolutionary!

posted by Lambo at 1:10 pm.

As the 232nd birthday of this great nation approaches, WPGU is out to start a ruckus with our oldest rivals, the British. We’re waging a war on the air waves this week as we pit American bands against their British counterparts in a series of battles for total musical domination. In this contest, there are no winners and there is no prize. That is, unless you count patriotism and and excellent sense of what’s awesome as prizes, in which case everybody wins!

Want to join in on the good fight? Tune in every day through Friday, July 4th at 12:30 and 5:30 as we spin the songs from the opposing artists, then log on to the217.com/wpgu to vote on which song was better. Polls will only be open for 3 hours, so log on quick! As they say in Chicago, vote early, vote often!

Also this week at WPGU:

  • We’re playing Glow-in-the-dark Ultimate Frisbee on the South Quad as part of our ongoing Summer Twilight Games! Come out to the South Quad on Wednesday at 8pm to join in the fun.
  • WPGU is cleaning out it’s prize closet and giving you a chance to pick up some cool free stuff at an undisclosed location. Tune in on Thursday to find out where the WPGU van will be as part of our Mobile Garage Giveaway, then come find us to get cool free stuff, including CD’s, t-shirts, and the random crap that makes us cool to know!
  • Artist Carl Hauck is being featured as our Band of the Week. Tune every day at 4:30 to hear a new track by this awesome musician!

That’s where we’re at for this patriotic week. Be sure to tune in as you celebrate the birth of something awesome.

AMERICA!

This week at WPGU: Capture something special!

posted by Lambo at 5:50 pm.

What a week for rockin music and fun in the sun! WPGU is rolling into another summer week with a lot of exciting events and some cool programming, too!

  • First off, our Twilight Game this week is going to be Capture the Flag! This Risky ritual (pun intended) of awesomeness and espionage will take place on the South Quad at 8PM and feature two teams, two flags, and a lot of good times.
  • Next off, this week is the last week to enter the WPGU Be the DJ Contest! Want to show us how it’s done? Think you’ve got better music than we do? email your summer-themed iTunes playlist to bethedj@wpgu.com or drop it off at our studios before Friday at noon.
  • On Ticket Tuesday this week, we’re giving away 5 pairs of tickets to Little Pieces with New Ruins on Sunday, June 22! The show will be held at The High Dive, and looks to be an awesome good time!
  • SPEAKING OF NEW RUINS… They are this week’s WPGU Band of the Week! Tune in at 4:30 every day this week for your chance to hear a new track by this awesome band!
  • And finally, be sure to check out the WPGU booth at Taste of Champaign-Urbana this weekend, as we will be out there with fun, games, and some cool swag throughout the weekend!
  • We’ve got a long week ahead of us with a lot to do, but it looks to be a good time for all who attend!

    Peace.

    Twilight Games

posted by Matt at 11:01 pm.

Tonight was the kick-off to a summer full of Twilight Games. This week we played Ghost in the Graveyard, hiding, running, and dodging our way around the South Quad. It was sweaty, heart-pounding, action-packed, and an absolute blast. Thanks to everyone who came out. And to those who missed all the fun, do not fret my friends. WPGU will be hosting Twilight Games every Wednesday this summer. Just meet at the South Quad at sunset (8:30pm) and be ready to relive all of your favorite childhood night games. Next week we’re playing Kick the Can, so wear your running shoes. We’ll do a quick run-through of the rules so don’t worry if your memory is a little foggy on the specifics. Other games to look forward to include Capture the Flag, Sardines, and many more. See you out there!

    • Nextly, this week WPGU is giving away tickets to see Woodbox Gang with Corn Desert Ramblers at High Dive. Some of you might remember Corn Desert Ramblers at the WPGU/Buzz Local Music Awards. Oh you don’t? Well check out their set below.
    • Also, every Friday this Summer, WPGU is throwing a beach party. Come out to our studios at 512 E. Green Street in the heart of Campustown to join in for some fun in the sun (sunshine optional).

    New Music on WPGU (4/28/08)

posted by Matt Klomp at 3:40 pm.

We’ve got some great new music arriving just in time for summer. Enjoy!

Nine Inch Nails - Discipline - Trent Reznor continues to churn out the hits with this newly-released single, which will be on the next NIN record. You can download this song for free right now from the NIN Website.

She and Him - Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? - While it seems like just about every pseudo-celebrity on the planet has delusional ambitions of releasing a pop record, Zooey Deschanel (along with musician M. Ward) happens to have a fantastic voice. If you’re unfamiliar with the name, she’s acted in several movies, including Almost Famous, in which she plays the main character’s rebellious sister. You might also remember her from Elf, in which she does some showing off of her voice. Looks like the bar is set pretty high, Scarlet.

    Also listen for:

No Use For A Name - I Want to Be Wrong
    Annuals - Around Your Neck
