The Anti-LMA’s? Why Next Thursday May Pose a Tough Choice

Anti-LMA

Poorly vandalized LMA Logo

I’ve read just about every complaint people have with Illini Media’s Local Music Awards, and have also seen most of them successfully defended. The majority of beef people have with the process can be summarized at Seth Fein’s Smile Politely blog or by our own Matt Klomparens via All Shook Down. In short, the LMA’s are seen as simply an excuse for IMC to make $$ instead of as a tribute to the hard working bands of the CU scene. I will not lay down my opinion as I am currently a Buzz employee, but both sides make solid arguments. I will, however, point out that there are some great bands conspicuously missing from the nominees and the Awards Show…

Which brings me to the point of this post - whichever side of the fence you stand on, next Thursday may pose a touch choice in shows to attend.

A slew of excellent local artists will be trying to drown out the Highdive at Memphis on Main. Interestingly, proceeds will go to special charities chosen by the bands. A stab at the advertising profit made by IMC perhaps? Nonsense aside, I’m a little upset that I won’t be able to share my time between live coverage of the Awards Show and the Charity Show’s World’s First Flying Machine, Elsinore, The Beauty Shop, Zmick, and Tall Tale. Either way, both events will be fun.

The LMA Show is April 3 at The Highdive - doors 8 pm, show 9 pm (free admission)

The Charity Show is also April 3 at Memphis on Main - doors 8 pm (donations to charity accepted)

Theres also a show at the Canopy Club the same night for part of UCHIPHOPs hip hop awareness week featuring a ton of hip hop acts. The sugargliders, Krukid, Text, Cornbread , and Jonah will be there as well as a ton of out of town acts. Be there the show will be good times.

The hope is that people come down to the 50 block of Main St. on Thursday, and check out both shows — I know that I am going to pop into The Highdive to catch a couple sets and to coerce Ward into buying me a soda water. They charge me $2.00 for carbonation! Holy…

Please, feel free to stop by the Charity show as well. Its free really - and if you’d like to donate to the causes - then that’s a great thing too.

WPGU is an amazing station with far more Pluses than Minuses.

Much respect.

Our hope in Elsinore is that WPGU realizes that we need the support of our local radio stations, and if any of the CU bands out on tour are going to feel like we have complete hometown support, it takes the biggest, most persuasive station playing our newest, and pre-approved, music. We know you want to show love and that with such a giant staff it can be hard to focus energy in all the right places, but just take what we’ve all said and bring it in for a huge local music-supporting hug. Thanks!

I thought the IMC was a not-for-profit… oh wait, you’re talking about the Illini Media Company, not the Independent Media Center. Hah!

Carry on.

Highdive is located at 51-53 E. Main St.
Memphis on Main is located at 55 E Main St.

So, yeah - like - really close.

The bands that get their new songs on the radio are the ones who send their new stuff directly to the music director, send an email, or come in and personally talk to the staff. There are many local bands who have their newest songs on our station.

Email me, Ryan, or come talk to me (I’m there all the time) and bring a CD. I’ll get your songs in ASAP. That goes for all local bands… email mattklomparens@wpgu.com and say who you are, tell him you’re sending a CD, and tell him what track you want played on the air. We want to help.
