Show me the way to the next whiskey bar

Oh man, the Local Music Awards was one hell of a night. Kicking off the event at the Highdive with an open bar of Jack Daniels made for an interesting few hours.

There were eight bottles of the whiskey provided for those who arrived early, which took less than an hour to demolish. Feeling fruity, I opted for whiskey sours, and one shot—just for good measure.

[I must say that the bar was presented very nicely—actually that was the nicest it’s ever been in Highdive in my experience. With lovely centerpieces on the tables (flowers submerged in water below a floating candle) and the217.com coasters set on the table, everything just seemed, well, cleaner.]

The night was a great opportunity to see the local music scene, and bond with fellow co-workers. I became the bar’s local cig-vendor, providing smokes to the other buzz staffers who have all quit smoking…except when they drink (a common phenomenon).

The revelation of the night: whiskey is a pretty intense way to get started, and trying to maximize your access to free whiskey before it runs out…well it heightens the excitement. By midnight, some were dancing on the platform where the musicians accepted their awards, others were not feeling so hot and disappeared. Now it’s Friday, and I think I’m going to stay at home. I guess I just can’t hang after such a rowdy Thursday.

Janice McDuffee: Don't let the title fool you, this blog is not just about getting drunk—although usually in close association nevertheless. About me? I'm the Food and Drink editor at buzz (soon to be Arts Editor as well), about to act on the fantasies I've played out in my head throughout my college career. You can usually find me in downtown Champaign on the weekends, but you never know...
