Packin’ a punch at Boltini’s

posted by Janice at 2:32 pm.

I have said it once, and I will say it again. I love Boltini’s.

It’s not just the ambience of the dimly lit facility with old-fashioned decor and candlelit tables. It’s the powerful martinis that pack a punch while pleasing my palette.

Yes, they are expensive, and $8 for a drink sounds kind of ridiculous. Considering the power of the ‘tini, I would have to argue otherwise. After two or three martinis you’re going to feel it, I don’t care if you are a lightweight or not.

If you go onto campus and buy mixed drinks at $3 or $4 dollars a pop, you’re going to get half the liquor served in a plastic cup in a bar with sticky floors and annoying people. You’ll also end up spending just as much if you had just opted for downtown.

The mocha martini was delicious as usual, and perfect for dessert after dinner (if you‘re not put off by thick, creamy alcoholic drinks). This was followed by the island cosmo martini, with the looks of a regular cosmopolitan (minus the lemon peel but rather adorned with a lime) the drink was reminiscent, as the server had suggested, of red gummi bears. Yum.

I am a dangerous dancer

posted by Janice at 11:24 am.

I think I shouldn’t go dancing anymore. I broke 3 glasses at Soma last night while wildly flailing my arms about. It was pretty funny when I broke the second one, because I turned around and knocked it out of a guy’s hand in a manner that seemed intentional (he had quite a look of shock on his face). I gave my apologies, and tried to tone down my dance of jubilation. It was obvious after glass number 3 that it was not possible.

If I may reference Alice Cooper, schoooooooooool’s out FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!

Shakin’ it at C-Street

posted by Janice at 12:53 pm.

So I’ve heard a lot of crap talked about C-Street lately—namely that it was not as fun as it used to be and that the crowd there had turned skeezy. I went there last night with this predisposition in mind, but I didn’t find it to be more or less skeezy than it ever was (there’s always going to be people like that at any bar). The floor was sticky, but that is a hazard you’ll find in many campus bars.

This brings me to my next point: I always have an amazing time when I go to C-Street. Perhaps its because we usually end a night there, and I’ve already had a few drinks to wet my appetite for dancing like a maniac—but there is no better place to let loose than this bar.

I remember the first time I came to C-Street, I thought that I would feel weird and everyone would know I was straight and not want me there. I couldn’t have been more wrong, and there seemed like there were more straight people last night than on previous nights. I also enjoy being able to go out and dance with my girlfriends without the constant interruptions of guys coming up and grinding behind you in hopes that you’ll go home with them.

I wish I had pictures to show, but the batteries on my camera died. Next time!

11 Manliest Cocktails in the World!

posted by Janice at 7:25 pm.

So this was brought to my attention.

http://www.holytaco.com/2008/04/15/the-11-manliest-cocktails-in-the-world

I don’t know what to think about this list. It seems kind of substantial, but if you’re gonna talk “manly,” anything served in a martini glass is not what crosses my mind. Hmm…

Pending stalemate on the horizon

posted by Janice at 11:11 am.

With all of the work I am anticipating to wrap up my college career, I am dreading the stalemate that will surely develop in my nightlife. It’s a shame, because it seems as the weather warms up and people become excited about break, there are more people lining the streets. BOO on the forthcoming stress and missing out on all the fun.

By the way, if you’re in the mood for a small sports bar and you want to venture off campus and downtown, I would recommend Office II. It’s always a good time, even if the bathrooms are gross.

Short thought on Mom’s Weekend…

posted by Janice at 12:48 pm.

I have never really been able to participate in Mom’s weekend, but from what I’ve observed, it seems to be a really great tradition.

I’ve never took part in it because I’m a local—my mom has been to a lot of the restaurants in town and would have absolutely no desire to go out drinking with me. It’s kind of like I have my own “Mom’s Weekend” every time the week comes to an end.

After going out this weekend, I didn’t see as many moms as I would have expected, but from what I did see, these women were having a really good time and so were their daughters. Going into Soma, the last thing I expected to see was a group of moms and their daughters dancing on the raised platform seating and below on the main floor, shaking their hips to “Baby Got Back” and various other rap tunes. When I wrote the top 5 places to take your mom, I didn’t think that Soma would have made a good candidate. I was wrong. What a great bonding experience to party with your mom, especially if you’re not used to seeing her let loose.

It’s at this age that that your mom becomes more than that maternal figure who punished and rewarded you, who fixed your problems whenever she could, who raised you to become the person you are today. Now she’s your friend too.

So, advice for next year, take your mom dancing!

Does this beer make me look fat?

posted by Janice at 10:43 pm.

So I found this Web site called Beer100.com. Ever heard of it?

On the site they have a list of domestic and imported beers with the calorie and carb count, as well as the alcohol content. Below I have compiled a list of the beers I see most frequently, either at the bar or filling beer pong cups (when I used to play beer pong…it’s been a while) and their calorie count. I threw in Colt 45 because there’s always someone who’s low on cash and gets his night started with a 40.

I’ve only included calories because, well, that’s what people tend to care more about. While counting calories is more commonly associated with women, I’ve seen it A LOT with men as well.

Will this keep you from drinking your favorite beer? Hopefully not. I’ve always used moderation as a justification. The trick is not to fail at moderation.

This is the calorie count for 12 oz. of each beer according to Beer100.com. Visit the sight for a more complete list.

Pineapple Margaritas

posted by Janice at 3:29 pm.

Adhering to my older brother’s tastes, my entourage for the night started things off at Esquire.

I knew that someone like my brother, who dislikes a lot of facets that makes up nightlife in CU, or anywhere else, would surely enjoy this bar. (I would say that he generally dislikes anywhere that is not a pub.) The mix of people is pretty diverse age-wise, and it is super laid-back.

With the wonderful warmer weather, it was bearable to sit outside which is always a personal preference for me. Upon the suggestion of the main boss-woman at Buzz (Stephanie Prather), I wanted to try their pineapple-infused tequila—the perfect concoction for those of us who love pineapple, and who love tequila.

I inquired of this seemingly heavenly mix to the bartender, who I always go to as he works the bar in the pool-room for fast service and stiff drinks. What do I mix it with? How much is it? He unexpectedly took on the character of your prototypical small-town bartender—“Well people usually shoot it ‘round here. Or they take it in a margarita.”

I was sold, and it was delicious. Surprisingly salty from the drip of the thick ring of rock salt covering the brim of my glass, but mostly sweet and pleasant, garnished with a fresh slice of pineapple—it brought on fantasies of summer. Of course it was cold enough to have the heat lamps on outside, and I was still wearing a coat, but it was comfortable and a much needed improvement. It wasn’t spring break, but I was happy.

Show me the way to the next whiskey bar

posted by Janice at 11:41 am.

Oh man, the Local Music Awards was one hell of a night. Kicking off the event at the Highdive with an open bar of Jack Daniels made for an interesting few hours.

There were eight bottles of the whiskey provided for those who arrived early, which took less than an hour to demolish. Feeling fruity, I opted for whiskey sours, and one shot—just for good measure.

[I must say that the bar was presented very nicely—actually that was the nicest it’s ever been in Highdive in my experience. With lovely centerpieces on the tables (flowers submerged in water below a floating candle) and the217.com coasters set on the table, everything just seemed, well, cleaner.]

The night was a great opportunity to see the local music scene, and bond with fellow co-workers. I became the bar’s local cig-vendor, providing smokes to the other buzz staffers who have all quit smoking…except when they drink (a common phenomenon).

The revelation of the night: whiskey is a pretty intense way to get started, and trying to maximize your access to free whiskey before it runs out…well it heightens the excitement. By midnight, some were dancing on the platform where the musicians accepted their awards, others were not feeling so hot and disappeared. Now it’s Friday, and I think I’m going to stay at home. I guess I just can’t hang after such a rowdy Thursday.
