Marvel Zombies 3 #1

posted by Matt Knicl at 10:02 pm.

Would I sound like a weirdo if I said Marvel Zombies 3 was more succulent than the flesh of a scared teenager? Probably. That’s why I’m saying Marvel Zombies 3 is as good as the original and defiantly better than the sequel, instead.

Marvel Zombies 3 #1

The main story focuses on the invasion of the Marvel Zombies from their universe to the mainstream Marvel Universe (616). This is a cool premise because the zombie characters can meet their non-zombie counterparts, basically because again, that battle would be really cool. I mean, honestly, this series is about fanboy crazy fun, not serious or emotional brooding found in many comics today. There is no point to this series other than plain fun (which the sequel kind of forgot), which means the writer has license to do whatever will make the fan happy.

This first issue is a fun start to the series, introducing an awesome super hero team just so they can get eaten, and also throwing in random and bizarre aspects of recent and past Marvel history - like S.W.O.R.D., Project Lightning Storm, and the Nexus of Realities. Morbius hasn’t made a cameo in awhile, and after learning about Iron Man’s past story arcs, I find it neat that Jocasta is back. I love Warren Ellis’ version of Machine Man, but Marvel Editorial seems to frown on other writers portraying the robot similar to Futurama’s Bender, so maybe the fun character we expect won’t show, but that’s not a big deal. Seeing zombie Deadpool makes up for everything this issue could have possibly lacked!

This is the perfect series for someone who wants comics to be funny. Check this out, even if you haven’t read the other volumes.

WizardWorld Chicago 08

posted by Matt Knicl at 9:11 pm.

WizardWorld Logo

Beginning on Thursday and concluding today, this convention was hosted in Rosemont, up in Chicago. Compared to earlier this year’s New York Comic Con, WizardWorld was a more laid back experience, where speakers and company reps spoke more candidly and seemed less stressed. This was a far better fan experience than New York, and while writers and such qualified every secret with “We’ll be revealing in San Diego”, there was less showmanship - sensationalism geared at new projects - and more reflection on the medium, at least in the sessions.

I saw the hilarious Robert Kirkman and a retrospective on Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev’s Daredevil. I also got to see the Marvel and DC panels, as well as the first ever Marvel & DC panel, where Bendis, Brian Reed, and C.B. Cebulski sat with Gail Simone and Geoff Johns to talk about what they liked about the other company. I would have seen more, but I could only attend Friday, as some of my friends were so inconsiderate that they just had to get married this weekend. Read the rest of this entry »

Cape & Cowl Week 13

posted by Matt Knicl at 3:19 pm.

I Sell Out So You’ll Buy Me Out

There are always gimmicks associated with every character-based franchise. Cape & Cowl is no exception - I’ve got to diversify them like Disney, Marvel, and Warnes Bros if I want to make a buck!

Some of the biggest sell-outs by American companies is the mangazation of American properties. And of course, you need giant robots and collectible creatures to do that!

Amory Wars, Vol. 1: The Second Stage Turbine Blade TPB (Image) - Hey Coheed & Cambria fans! Be one among the fence and get this book, which reworks the already existing Coheed comics and completes the storyline (which is incomplete without the other albums’ series). Did I mention all of C&C’s albums are about an epic space saga that the band plans to release in comic form? No? I’m sure I did. Read the rest of this entry »

Leah Moore & John Reppion, an interview

posted by Matt Knicl at 12:07 pm.

They aren’t comic’s only married creative team, but they’re one of the few. Working together on such titles as Albion, Wild Girl, and titles using other creative properties, Leah Moore and John Reppion continue to bring new ideas and unique interpretations of the medium.

Recently, Moore and Reppion took time to talk to me about their new crossover and their zombie series, Raise the Dead. Read the rest of this entry »

Stand-up Comics for Feb. 27, 2008

posted by Matt Knicl at 7:50 pm.

The Savage Sword of Conan Vol. 2 TPB (Dark Horse/Marvel) - Reprinting old Marvel Conan comics, Dark Horse has been bringing most of the Conan books to us as color comics in slim, expensive trades. These Dark Horse Presents books are like the Marvel Essentials - about twenty issues of black-and-white reprints in one volume. It may seem nit-picky, but it seems to me that the paper quality is much better for these Dark Horse editions when compared to Essentials or Showcase Presents. This volume contains classic Conan adaptations like “The Slithering Shadow” and “The Pool of the Black One.” Read the rest of this entry »

Jack of Fables #18

posted by Matt Knicl at 5:16 pm.

Jack of the Tales is in Americana, the American Fable land stationed somewhere in the Homelands.

He is with the Pathetic Fallacy, Humpty Dumpty and begrudgingly one of his former captors, Hillary Page, Paul Bunyan, Babe the Tiny Blue Ox, and Raven of Native American mythology. While Page has another mission, Jack is (of course) searching for gold.

Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash #3

Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash #3

Ashley “Ash” Williams is creating quite the resume these days. Not only is he an S-Mart employee, but fresh off this adventures in his own series and fighting the Marvel Zombies Ash seeks to destroy more Deadite zombies in the form of two of horror’s largest slashers.

Jason Vorhees and Freddy Krueger have met before in the movie Freddy vs. Jason. There was supposed to be a movie sequel to this clash, featuring Bruce Campbell as Ash, but the movie fell apart. Luckily this story that needs to be told has made its way to comics as a joint project between DC’s Wildstorm imprint and Dynamite Entertainment. Read the rest of this entry »
