Joss Whedon’s New Project

Dr. Horrible Teaser Poster

As online distribution continues to evolve with minisodes and blogs (like this one!), Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy and Firefly, plans to bring to the internet Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Set to be released in three segments for free viewing, the show stars Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Slither) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother).

A musical, the plot will focus around the villainous Dr. Horrible (Harris) fighting his nemesis Captain Hammer. The movie airs online July 15th and will eventually make it’s way to DVD with rumored bonus footage.

Runaways #30

Runaways #30

It took a while, but Joss Whedon’s run on Runaways has finally concluded. This was a story set in the early 1900s, where our time’s Runaways escaped the Punisher and Kingpin by going to the past - a New York filled with superhumans known as Wonders.

This was the strongest story arc so far, and I say this because Runaways so far has really lacked a direction. The characters, while original and unique, were thrust into a few situations and really, from that, haven’t grown or matured (Marvel needs to keep them “pure” to use them for another decade or so).

These guys are an example of manufactured emotion - without having years to develop characters and their relationships, the reader is told how the characters feel. For a series that passes itself off as a teen series, based in relationship drama, Runaways fell apart time after time because you could never really see why someone liked the other.

Runaways is more about gimmick than execution. The concepts of characters are original, and their gimmick carries the series. It wasn’t until this new arc, and hopefully this will continue in Tony Moore’s future story arc, that the characters stopped being shells of Dawson’s Creek and finally became comic characters with actual interpersonal mileage.

Angel: After The Fall #6

The Fall Of Angel

After The Fall #6

With such a strong start, what could possibly doom this series with one issue?

Turning it into an anthology of short shorts would be one thing.

That’s right, after the cliff-hanger of last issue, Angel is now three stories (not dealing with the previous issues), not written by Joss Whedon, and each story featuring a different artist. Angel is a relatively serious (or pretends to be) franchise and to have it all of a sudden drawn like a cartoon… well, kind of tacky, even if it is John Byrne.

Thor #7

Thor #7 (Marvel) - J. Michael Straczynski has not yet really wowed me. His run on Amazing Spider-man lacked direction and ended (probably by editorial mandate) with the erasing of about half of Spider-man’s continuity. The Twelve was a dozen new faces I didn’t care about. His run on Thor so far has been similarly lack-luster, with the exception of some funny moments (like the Asgardian gods attending a local government meeting). However, the momentum has been building in the series. I’m hoping the series does get better soon though, because I’m giving it one more issue until I’m out.

Serenity: Better Days #1 (of 3)

Those Left Behind #1

There are things I like about this miniseries. Of course, it goes without saying that there are things I don’t like as well, the biggest being the necessity of this story. Better Days takes place sometime before the last episode of Firefly “Objects in Space” and well before the movie Serenity. This brings up the issue of why the series is now called Firefly instead of Serenity, seeing as this comic deals more with the show than the movie based upon it, but that’s probably a legal thing.

No, my chief concern would have to be what is best for the franchise - sure, keeping the name and characters around is swell, but for what purpose? There are so many rumors about one-shots and other Serenity miniseries, but those would just be the proverbial mortally wounded deer still trying to limp along. Read the rest of this entry »

Mighty Avengers #10

Mighty Avengers #10 (Marvel) - I mentioned last week that New Avengers #39 and Mighty Avengers #10 were supposed to come out this week, but it looks like due to allegations of art theft against artist David Mack Marvel has delayed printing New Avengers #39. Controversy aside, Brian Michael Bendis’ Avenger titles have been top notch, even in the face of crossovers. I think that is because Bendis basically created Secret InvasionRead the rest of this entry »

Justice Society of America #12

Justice Society of America #12 (DC) - In this issue Jakeem Thunder returns and the JSA “reaches out to the next wave of legacy heroes: the new Mr. America, Judomaster, Amazing Man and more!” I think I would like this series much more if the roster didn’t change every three issues and relationships are weren’t manufactured and forced, rather than earned. But in team books like JSA, I seldom look for relationships and more at the juxtaposition of various characters. JSA works because of who the team members are, not necessarily what they do. Kingdom Come Superman just has to be in the book for me to want to read it, and if he doesn’t develop as a character, there are a dozen other people on the team I can turn to. Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #5

Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #5 (DC) - GO BUY THIS COMIC! I got to interview this series’ writers, Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and they told me that due to low sales Uncle Sam may not return (I’ll post that later this week). This can’t be! Uncle Sam is the most creative and well-written title amongst a myriad of sub-par tie-in crap. Don’t wait for the trade for this one! Read the rest of this entry »

Long Live The Browncoats!!!

For many, the movie Serenity may not have made sense. And why should it? The movie was meant to satiate the desires of devoted Firefly fans (like me!).

If you have no gorram clue what I’m taking about, Firefly was a sci-fi/western hybrid show created by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) for FOX. Poor scheduling aired the episodes out of order and the show was canceled. Dong ma?

Though the movie was meant to cater to fans, there was enough new in the film that viewers could jump on board. Firefly and Serenity are now cult favorites and continue to find new audiences. Read the rest of this entry »
