For those of us wanting a quick refresher course on Deadpool before his new series begins in September, Marvel has set up the Deadpool Saga online, a quick comic designed to explore Deadpool’s history in the Marvel Universe. Take a look if you are interested.

p.s. I’m heading off to San Diego Comic Con, so I’ll be sure to update as the week unfolds.

Watchmen trailer online

Those of you who went to see The Dark Knight this weekend saw the trailer for the highly-anticipated movie adaptation to Alan Moore’s Watchmen, the first comic book ever collected in trade paperback.

The trailer looks awesome, and I’m looking forward to this movie, even though Alan Moore doesn’t approve. The comic is about an allegorical set of super heroes now in retirement. It’s the 1980s and the height of the Cold War. The comic is a tome, 12 issues, but well worth the read. The storyline is brilliant, but filled with all sorts of homage and allusions to comics. In fact, the world of Watchmen is a reflection of DC’s history, and acts as a massive love letter to comics fans. The movie will most likely remove a lot of these nuances to make the film more appealing to a wider audience.

All in all, this will most likely be a box office hit. Comic fans have known about Watchmen for years, and hopefully hype up to the film’s release will send people to bookstores to see what it’s about.

High Rollers’ Gary Phillips on YouTube

posted by Matt Knicl at 11:48 pm.

BOOM! Studios is putting out a four part miniseries featuring writer Gary Phillips sharing his background and knowledge of Los Angeles, the foundation of his new series High Rollers.

This series has been an unexpected hit for BOOM!, and Phillips continues his comic writing career, which focuses on crime and the underworld. This is a good bonus for the many fans of this book, and also a good look at a writer’s process. Check the video out below, and look for future installments on YouTube.

First 5 Minutes of Dark Knight Online

posted by Matt Knicl at 12:01 am.

It seems the beginning of the new Batman movie is up online, for who knows how long.

This is the Joker in action. This seems to be a good set up, and didn’t fall into the “we need to show an origin” trap the earlier Batman films did.

The Dark Knight goes public for reals in theaters July 18th.

Dr. Horrible Teaser Poster

As online distribution continues to evolve with minisodes and blogs (like this one!), Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy and Firefly, plans to bring to the internet Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Set to be released in three segments for free viewing, the show stars Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Slither) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother).

A musical, the plot will focus around the villainous Dr. Horrible (Harris) fighting his nemesis Captain Hammer. The movie airs online July 15th and will eventually make it’s way to DVD with rumored bonus footage.

Newer Hellboy 2 Trailer Online

posted by Matt Knicl at 10:50 pm.

Hellboy 2 poster

Head on over to Apple.com for the new Hellboy 2 trailer.

This new trailer shows off that fancy Pan’s Labyrinth money. Many new monsters (hopefully not all of them) are shown that haven’t been previously revealed, like the monster bazaar, an unusual old lady and the former king of the monsters. Every time I see this trailer, I get chills, and I know that many people are looking forward to this film - people unfamiliar with the comics and even the first film.

People looking to prepare themselves for this new film need not worry - the film’s premise is a new, unique story never seen before. But, seeing the first film couldn’t hurt, and Dark Horse has reissued the older Hellboy volumes as well as the spin-off B.P.R.D. series. New Hellboy books focusing on Hellboy, B.P.R.D., Abe Sapien, Professor Bruttenholm, and the pulp spy hero Lobster Johnson are also available in trade paperback forms, or will be soon, just in time for the movie, or as Dark Horse editor Scott Allie called it, the “big-budget commercial.”

Garfield Minus Garfield

posted by Matt Knicl at 4:31 pm.

A few people have heard about this, and I think it’s great. What would happen if you took Garfield out of the Garfield strips? What you get is a really, really sad take on Jon. Makes you wonder if Garfield is all in Jon’s head? What is it with imaginary cats?

Hopefully Jim Davis thinks this is funny, too!

Leah Moore & John Reppion, an interview

posted by Matt Knicl at 12:07 pm.

They aren’t comic’s only married creative team, but they’re one of the few. Working together on such titles as Albion, Wild Girl, and titles using other creative properties, Leah Moore and John Reppion continue to bring new ideas and unique interpretations of the medium.

Recently, Moore and Reppion took time to talk to me about their new crossover and their zombie series, Raise the Dead. Read the rest of this entry »

Incredible Hulk Movie Trailer Online

posted by Matt Knicl at 11:40 pm.

The new Incredible Hulk movie trailer is online.

Ed Norton as Bruce Banner

Apparently Norton had the
same reaction I did when
he heard they were making
a new Hulk movie.

While I didn’t like the first Hulk movie, the one Ang Lee directed, as far as the graphics went it was perfect at portraying the Hulk. Of course, the plot was a little hokey and the comic panel recreation slightly jarring, but why after 5 years we need a remake boggles my mind. Sure, Hulk is cool, but do we need another movie?

That’s right kids, this movie is not a sequel - it’s starting from scratch to “save” the Hulk franchise. Why not make a remake of a better movie, like Howard the Duck?

And I can’t help but feel like we’ve seen Ed Norton is the MPD role before - Fight Club, only Tyler Durden is a jade giant.

Make Your Own Webcomic! (sort of)

posted by Matt Knicl at 7:56 pm.

If you are a fan of Homestarrunner.com, then the Strong Bad Emails are no stranger to you. Of late, I have been really bad with checking that humor site. A few weeks back, Strong Bad spoofed web comics. Hilarity, as it often does in Strongbadia, ensues.
