The Boys #17

The Boys #17

From the cover, it’s hard to tell what this issue is about, and like the old adage states, you shouldn’t pay attention. But of course, you do, and seeing the blood soaked heart, one thinks that violence is heading Huey’s way.

If only. What follows is quite possibly one of the grossest moments in comics I can recall, next to Ennis’ other character from Preacher who literally f***s himself.

I found myself laughing out loud, something that rarely happens, when the “oh s%&$ moment” occurred, and for something so crude, brilliant, and original to take place proves that this series is one of the most fun series out there. Sure, nothing else happened really in this issue, other than some aside character development, but I’m willing to wait to see where the series is going.

Stand-up Comics for April 2, 2008

posted by Matt Knicl at 1:30 pm.

Secret Invasion #1 (Marvel) - Marvel’s big crossover event begins here! This is the comic that defines Marvel for the next few months.

Hulk: Planet Hulk TPB (Marvel) - What happened before Secret Invasion? World War Hulk, that’s what! This is the lead up for jolly green and how our favorite gamma-irradiated scientist became the king of a world.

Shazam: The Greatest Stories Ever Told TPB (DC) - A compilation of Captain Marvel stories, from his first appearance to his later 90s series. As not many definitive chronological collections have been offered at this point, this is really all Shazam fans have got!

The Boys #17 (Dynamite) - Storylines converge as a ghost from Huey’s past literally has a bone to pick with him.

Brit #5 (Image) - Robert Kirkman’s fun series about an immortal and the crazy world he lives in continues. Kirkman is really good with disposable ideas and characters, using fun and bizarre entities in the background or filler (I’m talking buzz saw-laden animals here, people).

Army of Darkness/Xena: Why Not? #1

Army of Darkness/Xena: Why Not? #1

More Boomstick For Your Buck

As I mentioned before, I met this crossover with hesitancy. But, after reading the first issue, I can say my fears were laid to rest.

One of those annoying mini-Ashes from Army of Darkness (film) finds a miniature Necronomicon and uses it to time-travel to Xena’s time. Ash goes back to retrieve the aspect of the Necronomicon and stop his tiny self from destroying reality. Read the rest of this entry »

Leah Moore & John Reppion, an interview

posted by Matt Knicl at 12:07 pm.

They aren’t comic’s only married creative team, but they’re one of the few. Working together on such titles as Albion, Wild Girl, and titles using other creative properties, Leah Moore and John Reppion continue to bring new ideas and unique interpretations of the medium.

Recently, Moore and Reppion took time to talk to me about their new crossover and their zombie series, Raise the Dead. Read the rest of this entry »

Army of Darkness/Xena: Why Not? #1

Army of Darkness/Xena: Why Not? #1 (Dynamite) - As much as I love Bruce Campbell, I think he needs less focus. What I mean is the rate he’s going, he’s going to turn into a Chuck Norris Hot Topic fad that will burn out and with him, all that he’s ever touched, sort of like Rouge only with a bigger chin. I say this because fans of Evil Dead are excited about this crossover because the characters Campbell played, Ash and Autolycus, the King of Thieves, will meet. For me, that’s not that exciting as Campbell tends to play characters the same sarcastic way, and two versions of himself will be like someone talking to a mirror, only the reflection has a goatee. I’m more excited about Sam Raimi’s characters interacting with each other. I grew up on Hercules and Xena, and became enamored with the Evil Dead series because it was the same sort of humor. This should be about Sam Raimi and his legacy, and not about how “Bruce Campbell” they can make a comic. Read the rest of this entry »

Stand-up Comics for Feb. 27, 2008

The Savage Sword of Conan Vol. 2 TPB (Dark Horse/Marvel) - Reprinting old Marvel Conan comics, Dark Horse has been bringing most of the Conan books to us as color comics in slim, expensive trades. These Dark Horse Presents books are like the Marvel Essentials - about twenty issues of black-and-white reprints in one volume. It may seem nit-picky, but it seems to me that the paper quality is much better for these Dark Horse editions when compared to Essentials or Showcase Presents. This volume contains classic Conan adaptations like “The Slithering Shadow” and “The Pool of the Black One.” Read the rest of this entry »

Ms. Marvel, an Interview

Ms. Marvel Vol. 3: Operation Lighting Storm TPB

Ms. Marvel Comics

One of my favorite comic series right now is Brian Reed’s Ms. Marvel. While a solo book, what appeals to me is the various characters that show up in the title as sounding boards for Carol Davers (Ms. Marvel) to bounce off of. So far the series is collected in three trade paperbacks and issue #24 came out last week.

Mr. Reed recently spoke to me about Ms. Marvel and his plans for the future. Read the rest of this entry »

Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash #3

Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash #3

Ashley “Ash” Williams is creating quite the resume these days. Not only is he an S-Mart employee, but fresh off this adventures in his own series and fighting the Marvel Zombies Ash seeks to destroy more Deadite zombies in the form of two of horror’s largest slashers.

Jason Vorhees and Freddy Krueger have met before in the movie Freddy vs. Jason. There was supposed to be a movie sequel to this clash, featuring Bruce Campbell as Ash, but the movie fell apart. Luckily this story that needs to be told has made its way to comics as a joint project between DC’s Wildstorm imprint and Dynamite Entertainment. Read the rest of this entry »
