Army of Darkness/Xena: Why Not? #1

Army of Darkness/Xena: Why Not? #1 (Dynamite) - As much as I love Bruce Campbell, I think he needs less focus. What I mean is the rate he’s going, he’s going to turn into a Chuck Norris Hot Topic fad that will burn out and with him, all that he’s ever touched, sort of like Rouge only with a bigger chin. I say this because fans of Evil Dead are excited about this crossover because the characters Campbell played, Ash and Autolycus, the King of Thieves, will meet. For me, that’s not that exciting as Campbell tends to play characters the same sarcastic way, and two versions of himself will be like someone talking to a mirror, only the reflection has a goatee. I’m more excited about Sam Raimi’s characters interacting with each other. I grew up on Hercules and Xena, and became enamored with the Evil Dead series because it was the same sort of humor. This should be about Sam Raimi and his legacy, and not about how “Bruce Campbell” they can make a comic.

Deepak Chopra’s Buddha #1 (Virgin) - It’s not just that Virgin is working to bring Indian stories and myths to America, but the fact that Deepak Chopra, a New York Times Bestselling author on religion and spirituality, realizes that comics are a legitimate medium that deserves focus.

New Avengers #39 (Marvel) - Okay, now it’s coming out, with a brand new cover!

Dan Dare #5 (Virgin) - Still loving this series. As the plot unfolds, and the Mekon’s attack commences, I am still amazed at Garth Ennis’ mastery of the Dare mythology, political and military elements, and a “family friendly” atmosphere (at least compare to his other works).

The Complete Badger Vol. 2 TPB (IDW) - This volume continues the collection of Mike Baron’s Badger series from various publishers. The last volume left Badger terrified on the floor, the persona of a child dominating his psyche. While it’s an old series, it’s new to me, and I anxiously want to see what themes and elements he will integrate into the series as it continues to progress.

Matt Knicl: My name is Matt Knicl. I'm a U of I alumn and one of those unemployed English majors Garrison Keillor likes to make fun of. I've been reading comics since high school and one day I would like to write them. My goal is to expose readers to what is out there in the world of comics and using my English powers, show what is worth reading or not. I can be reached at buzz.comics@gmail.com.
