“I know you didn’t just… turn gay all of a sudden.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #12, which acts as the “8th Season” of the television series, shows Buffy intimate with fellow slayer Satsu, the girl who risked her life to save Buffy in the previous issue.
While not written by series creator Joss Whedon, the comics are under his watchful eye. This story arc is penned by Drew Goddard, a writer for among other things, Buffy and Lost. As far as LGBT concerns go, Whedon has always been socially progressive with his characters, having Buffy’s friend Willow come out in Season 4. Likewise, his first run of Astonishing X-Men transformed the metaphor of “mutant” from race to an issue of sexuality, a metaphor the film X-Men 3 borrowed.
Of course, as the comic explains, Buffy seems to be experimenting. While the fallout from her one night stand will most likely have many repercussions (all her friends comedically walked into the room right after Buffy swore Satsu to secrecy), like Willow wondering why Buffy didn’t choose her, the implications for Buffy’s sexuality will most likely take a few months to explain.

Matt Knicl: My name is Matt Knicl. I'm a U of I alumn and one of those unemployed English majors Garrison Keillor likes to make fun of. I've been reading comics since high school and one day I would like to write them. My goal is to expose readers to what is out there in the world of comics and using my English powers, show what is worth reading or not. I can be reached at buzz.comics@gmail.com.
