The Savage Sword of Conan Vol. 2 TPB (Dark Horse/Marvel) - Reprinting old Marvel Conan comics, Dark Horse has been bringing most of the Conan books to us as color comics in slim, expensive trades. These Dark Horse Presents books are like the Marvel Essentials - about twenty issues of black-and-white reprints in one volume. It may seem nit-picky, but it seems to me that the paper quality is much better for these Dark Horse editions when compared to Essentials or Showcase Presents. This volume contains classic Conan adaptations like “The Slithering Shadow” and “The Pool of the Black One.”
Countdown to Final Crisis #9 (DC) - Now that the storylines have converged, Countdown isn’t as annoying as it has been. After killing Granny Goodness and simultaneously giving Harley Quinn the power of a god, I’m looking forward to see what happens next!
Marvel Zombies 2 #5 (Marvel) - I think the first series was better. I know that’s easy to say, but this second series takes place in an alternate future and deals with the human survivors of the first zombie outbreak. The remaining Marvel Zombies return after their galactic tour and fight, but there is no room to see more zombies, which was really the only reason I read the first volume. It’s Robert Kirkman, so the writing is solid, sure, but I was reading this series for the gimmick - zombie super heroes - but if there aren’t anymore, why am I reading? Regardless, this is the last issue, so hopefully we’ll see some crazy, random cameos.
Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash #5 (Wildstorm/Dynamite Entertainment) - Zombies, gore, and horror icons. ‘Nuff said!
Fables #70 (Vertigo) - After Flycatcher founded his Homeland kingdom of Haven, he invited all the non-human Fables stuck at “The Farm” to travel to this new land. Who goes and who stays? This could really cripple the Fable army if some of their heavy-hitters take off!

Matt Knicl: My name is Matt Knicl. I'm a U of I alumn and one of those unemployed English majors Garrison Keillor likes to make fun of. I've been reading comics since high school and one day I would like to write them. My goal is to expose readers to what is out there in the world of comics and using my English powers, show what is worth reading or not. I can be reached at buzz.comics@gmail.com.
