Welcome to the O.Z. (Don’t call it that)

I know this miniseries came out awhile ago, but I just got to see the 6 hour show on DVR. I remember at the time the project created some buzz and the DI even covered it.

Tin Man Cast

Tin Man is the alternate, modernized version of of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz that aired on the Sci-Fi channel. Virgin Comics also did a comic prequel online. Of course, you don’t actually have to have read the original book or seen the Judy Garland film, because this series is so far off it becomes its own thing.

Dorothy’s hip, youth name is D.G.; the Tin Man is a human cop, the Cowardly Lion is some sort of psychic monster, Toto is a magic teacher who can transform into a dog, and the only truthful (kinda) adaptation is the Scarecrow, a genius with his mind removed. The Wicked Witch of the West is D.G.’s sister and the flying monkeys are tattoos on her boobs. No, I’m not kidding. The Munchkins are tribal natives and the poppy field is the Field of the Pappay [sic], home to weird raptor/dog things.

The series could have been two hours instead of six and failed to develop past the tenuous connections to the original plot, which were dropped after the second hour. The only thing that saved the show, even if only a little, was Zooey Deschanel, an actress I’ve been in love with since Big Trouble.

But, when compared to Wicked: The Musical or Alan Moore’s Lost Girls, this Tin Man was a little rusty.
