The song can be heard on
the upcoming album,
And Other Distractions,
set for release Feb. 12
I heard this song on the radio awhile back and was instantly drawn in. The song is “Hail to The Geek” by dEAf PEdESTRIANS and it describes rather accurately to the lives of us geeks. This replaced “The Geeks Get The Girls” by American Hi-Fi as my nerd anthem. I think it was the part about “I’ve got a Spider-man t-shirt” that hooked me as I have two.
I asked the members of the band a few questions about the song and why it is eerily accurate. A special thanks to drummer Russ Dignam for arranging this interview.
Matt Knicl: Why did you write “Hail to the Geek”?
-
CS Parker (lead vocals and bass): To amuse myself and my geeky friends!
The Band: It was our own personal joke, poking fun at ourselves then it ended up being structured into a real song.
Matt: Was this mocking or honoring the geeks?
-
CS: Honoring by far!
The Band: We are geeks ourselves, so we can poke fun with it!
Matt: Do you consider yourself geeks?
-
The Band: Uhhhhh… yes.
Matt: Do you read comics or engage in any other geekdom?
-
The Band: Uhhhhh… yes again! Comics, Chess, Miniature Painting, Table-Top RPGs, Video Games, Electronic/Gear Heads just to name a few.
Matt: Are there any parts of the lyrics that come from real life experiences?
-
CS: Pretty much all of the dP lyrics come from life experiences!
The Band: In this case truth is indeed stranger then fiction”.
-
“Hail to the Geek” is available now on iTunes and their new CD, And Other Distractions, will be released Feb. 12.

Matt Knicl: My name is Matt Knicl. I'm a U of I alumn and one of those unemployed English majors Garrison Keillor likes to make fun of. I've been reading comics since high school and one day I would like to write them. My goal is to expose readers to what is out there in the world of comics and using my English powers, show what is worth reading or not. I can be reached at buzz.comics@gmail.com.
