Marv Wolfman is a writer who has impacted the history of the medium more than most. His epic Crisis on Infinite Earths maxiseries in the 80s redefined the DC Universe and its story still carries DC today. Likewise, Mr. Wolfman has worked on the New Teen Titans as well as Marvel’s Tomb of Dracula series, where he created Blade. Recently he wrote Nightwing and will soon return to the Teen Titan he created, Raven in a 5-issue miniseries.
I was fortunate to ask Mr. Wolfman about this upcoming series.
Matt Knicl: For your upcoming Raven miniseries, what is it like creating a character and then returning to it after others have added on to their story?
-
Marv Wolfman: Nothing was done with Raven between my last story and Geoff [Johns] bringing her back and all he did was de-age her somewhat, which didn’t affect her core personality, so it was no problem.
Matt: What do you like about Raven?
Marv: She has a very solid back story which allows me to examine her from all angles. She’s an interesting personality, unlike many others, and because her powers are emotional by nature I can get into very human stories.
Matt: What is the basic plot of this series?
-
Marv: Raven senses that a student at Raven’s High School is going to be killed in five days. She doesn’t know which student or who the killer is. At the same time, Raven sees the students are having emotional attacks and she fears because she is in a new and younger body that she is responsible.
Matt: Are there any positive or negative trends you are noticing in comics today?
-
Marv: There are always positives and negatives but in terms of trends I like that we can now do stories for a much wider audience than before.
Matt: Do you have any upcoming projects?
-
Marv: Yes, but none I can talk about.

Matt Knicl: My name is Matt Knicl. I'm a U of I alumn and one of those unemployed English majors Garrison Keillor likes to make fun of. I've been reading comics since high school and one day I would like to write them. My goal is to expose readers to what is out there in the world of comics and using my English powers, show what is worth reading or not. I can be reached at buzz.comics@gmail.com.
