I forgot to mention last week that new comic book day is not Wednesday, rather the third business day of that week. While this usually falls on Wednesday, on weeks where Monday has stores closed, or like this or last week where Monday and Tuesday stores are closed, new comic book day is on Thursday and Friday respectively. So this Friday, check out some of the New Year’s newest comics.
Detective Comics #840 (DC) - Batman returns after his Resurrection of Ra’s Al Ghul adventures to battle “The Globe, a map-obsessed mastermind who charts his crimes with deadly accuracy.” I’m glad that Paul Dini can return to Batman writing that has no Countdown or other crossover dilution.
Howard the Duck #4 (Marvel) - Howard was locked in a cage in the last issue, but now he will break free and fight the conspiracy to brainwash America by using robotic news pundits in this series’ final issue.
The End League #1 (Dark Horse) - An epic quest that casts super heroes against the backdrop of a wasted world in search of the Hammer of Thor.
Ms. Marvel Vol. 3: Operation Lighting Storm TPB (Marvel) - Ms. Marvel continues to work in the Initiative and to train one of my favorite under-appreciated characters, Araña. Even though Araña’s life as a superheroine-in-training ends here, it is still cool just to see her written about.
Pride of Baghdad TPB (Vertigo/DC) - Brian K. Vaughan’s (Y:The Last Man) graphic novel comes to paperback. Focusing on a lion pride that escapes from a zoo at the start of the Iraq War, this series melds together the simplicity of Lion King with the complexity of political commentary. I fought to have this be one of our One Book One Campus book picks, but was turned down because it was too expensive as a hardcover.

Matt Knicl: My name is Matt Knicl. I'm a U of I alumn and one of those unemployed English majors Garrison Keillor likes to make fun of. I've been reading comics since high school and one day I would like to write them. My goal is to expose readers to what is out there in the world of comics and using my English powers, show what is worth reading or not. I can be reached at buzz.comics@gmail.com.
