Marvelling at Marvel’s Choice to Bring Back Marvel

When i first started getting into a lot of Marvel comics a few years back, there was a great legend that was always hinted at. This was a great hero - a pillar of the Marvel Universe. But by the time I was reading Marvel, Captain Marvel, alien Mar-Vell of the Kree, had died of cancer.

He was dead and unlike every other comic death ever - he stayed dead.

Captain Marvel Preview Page #4I took comfort in that. While other characters were brought back in a cheesy, campy manner - younger heroes taking up the name and costume of the fallen or resurrection - Captain Marvel had died.
His time had passed and his legacy stayed ever present because he had died.

But the Marvel bullpen has decided to bring Captain Marvel back.

Marvel Comics explained:

Spinning straight out of his shocking return in Civil War, Captain Marvel’s new life begins in Captain Marvel #1 (of 5)! He’s been plucked out of time before his death, but can the Kree soldier known as Mar-Vell make a difference with the scant time he’s got left? Acclaimed writer Brian Reed (New Avengers: Illuminati, Ms. Marvel) and artist Lee Weeks (Daredevil, Spider-Man: Death And Destiny) bring you a gripping epic about one man’s quest to make the world right before his end.

I don’t know if they needed to bring Marvel back. Doing so tarnishes the only legitimate death in comics.

Plus, the story, found in the Civil War: Marvel Universe TPB, would have had to utilize Captain Marvel to tell a unique story only Marvel could help them tell - and it didn’t. The story was a random look at the prison that held super powered beings that didn’t support the Super Human Registration Act, where heroes had to register their identities with U.S. government. Captain Marvel was the warden.

Really? Really? They didn’t need to do that.

Hopefully this series will be well done and not detract from Marvel’s legacy, but by having a new series at all, they all ready have.
