Captain America is back… in a fashion.

In March 2007, in Captain America #25, Captain America (Steve Rogers) was killed. Gunned down on the way to court after turning terrorist in the Marvel Comics Civil War, where heroes fought heroes over the law requiring all super-powered beings to register their identities with the U.S. Government.

Iron Man was for the act. Captain America was against it. Iron Man won.

Now Marvel is bringing Cap back.

According to the official Marvel press release:

Six months after the death of Steve Rogers captured national attention, Marvel is proud to unveil the new Captain America as designed by renowned, award winning artist Alex Ross! This bold new look, seen here for the first time, also serves as the variant cover to January’s Captain America #34, featuring the first appearance of this new Captain America! After the death of Steve Rogers, and the climactic events of Captain America #33, there must be a new Sentinel of Liberty and now Ross, one of the industry’s most renowned artists, has created a dynamic new look for the seminal hero.Captain America #34 Steve Epting Cover

But just who is this new Captain America? And why did he pick this costume? The answers arrive this January in Captain America #34 featuring Alex Ross’ new costume design for Captain America and a special variant cover by the legend himself! I like the new duds, and love that Alex Ross (Kingdom Come, Marvels) is involved in the project, even if it is just for a cover and design.

Yet, I hate the trend of comics publishers of killing or replacing their characters - keeping the costume and name, but putting another person entirely under the mask. This Captain America will not be the old Captain America. I liked Cap because he was Steve Rogers, a WW2 hero, not just his alter ego.Captain America #34 Alex Ross Cover

When Punisher briefly wore the Captain America persona in Punisher War Journal, he was still the Punisher, but when this new person takes up Cap’s mantle, most likely his WW 2 sidekick Bucky aka the Winter Soldier, he will not be Captain America. He will be someone entirely new, and even though he’ll have the name and a similar costume, he will never be Captain America.

This tarnishes the legacy of one of comics greatest heroes, dividing the name onto multiple characters. I don’t want a Captain America, I want the Captain America.

Captain America is dead. He should stay that way.
