I went to TGI Friday’s for the first time ever last night, and was completely shocked at how hotel-like the bathrooms were. I thought they were going to be really tacky and cheap-looking (like the obnoxious pop culture-entertainment decor around the restaurant), so I was completely surprised when I saw this.

About TGI Fridays, though — my boyfriend bought a chocolate/angel food cake combination for about $4.50, and it was less than a half-inch thick, had a sad drizzle of what must have been plain Hershey’s chocolate syrup and was as big as the circle made from connecting your two pointer fingers together and your thumbs together. $4.50 for three bites of cake? Stop watching Top Chef, TGI CEOs — you don’t run a gourmet restaurant, and that’s not a real amount of food.

Puppy Wuv

The best part of going to Marketplace Mall is the puppy store. I need to be near-pulled out of the store, as I seriously contemplated buying a dog last time. (It looked like a pillow. It was squishy and precious and I miss it.)

Too bad I’m not good at caring for other living things.

I Was There: Local Music Awards/Memphis On Main Charity Show

posted by Carlye at 12:48 pm.

[I was trying to install a Flickr plugin, but since this blog is operated by someone else (The217.com), I couldn’t do it. This might take a bit to load, but the files are half the size they typically are, so it shouldn’t be too bad.]

Local Music Awards:

Michael Coulter tells inappropriate jokes, half the audience gets awkward.

Agent Mos. I’d never heard him perform, but he was enjoyable, even if most of my brain energy was devoted to being intimidated by the other (real) photographers.

Hello, Yoho.

Memphis on Main.

I’ve seen Zmick a handful of times, but they’ve got their shit together and it sounds great:

Snowsera dressed the part to say the least. I had never seen them live, but the crowd went crazy for them. People were screaming their tiny heads off.

(Must have been the vests.)

And Memphis on Main, once again.

Until Elsinore’s show, the crowd seemed older and significantly less full of students, but by the time they hit the stage, the LMAs had ended and the crowd slowly filled in with people from next door. The show was fantastic and their new music is incredibly good. If you haven’t heard “The General,” stop reading this and listen to it right now.

Saturday Night Live Blogging

Host: Christopher Walken

Musical Guest: Panic! at the Disco

10:31 — I just actually thought Amy Poehler and Darrell Hammond were the Clintons. Holy shit.

dsc001492.jpg _42289464_clintons_afp416.jpg

10:34 — Christopher Walken has hosted “one hundred” times — this show is his centennial, he joked — yet still has an opening monologue that is simple, funny and not boring. You don’t always need someone singing and dancing to distract from the host in the beginning.

10:39 — Ugh, I forgot Panic at the Disco is playing.

10:41 — I still think that Annuale commercial is hilarious. ( But I can’t find it online, its deleted everywhere)

10:43 — I never realized how inappropriate Grease was. Ew.

10:55 — Walken plays a psycho freak really well.

10:59 —Lasercats Three!!!

11:00 — Christopher Walken in Laser Cats. Wonderful.

11:02 — Next week’s guests are Ashton Kutcher and Gnarls Barkley…ah, like a throwback episode to things that used to be cool!

11:04 — Kristin Wiig seems to have the same bizarre intensity in each role she plays, and it’s amusing, until she takes it too far. If she reeled it back just a bit, she’d be fantastic.

11:13 — The lead singer of Panic! at the Disco is playing an acoustic guitar, not exactly the right accessory for his black pants-vest-button down shirt pop punk look.

11:14 — Actually, he has a great voice. I wish he was using it on better songs than this radio pop, hook-heavy piece of crap.

11:20 — “After Gov. Bill Richardson switched his support from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama last weekend, an angry Bill Clinton said, ‘five times to my face he said he would never do that.’ Wow, so he looked you right in the face and he lied to you. What’s that like?!” — Seth Meyers on Weekend Update

11:30 — Bill Hader and Amy Poehler do fantastic Christopher Walken impressions.

11:31 — Especially Amy Poehler.

11:32 — Haha, it’s a Walken family reunion. I get it. This is awesome. How have they not done this before?!

11:34 — On getting a drink: “You drivin’? “Drivin’? No, I’m Walken!”

11:37 — Walken is playing a man who is scared of plants and puts googly eyes on all of them. My money’s on this being an Andy Samberg-writting sketch, but who cares. Plants with google eyes are so fucking cute.

11:41 — I don’t know how I feel about this Amy Poehler/Tina Fey surrogate mother movie. It seems watered down to appeal to the high school boy audience in order to make more money, but when I view it as an excuse for Amy and Tina to hang out and work together, I’ll gladly contribute $5-$9 to it.

11:48 — TV is coming back this Thursday!

11:50 — The lead singer of Panic! at the Disco’s mic was practically off. Didn’t SNL learn their lesson with Ashlee Simpson’s sound debacle?

11:58 — Wow, the rest of Panic at the Disco is hideous.

Yobs.

I write for Smile Politely now. I still work for buzz and The217.com also, and people might raise an eyebrow at the double CU-website work, but I’m freelancing and I just want to write for as many different places as possible.

And, just like every place I work at, it has a mugshot of me that is slightly awkward. Well, hey. Look at that. Me being awkward and unphotogenic. (But, it’s insanely better than last week’s buzz column photo. Sheesh, I look like an emo fetus in that one.)

I tapped into someone’s iTunes and got to listen to Girl Talk on the train!

You know how you wait and wait to buy a new iPod, digital camera or laptop and then when the price finally goes down you snatch it up and realize it was worth the wait?

That’s what it’s like with this blog. My eyes are closing so I’m going to go to sleep, but things have been on a delay, due to travels, and I’m not happy about it. But, by this time tomorrow, a shit ton of coverage will be posted! Local Music Awards reviews! LMA photos! Spoon review! It will be better than the launch of the iPhone, I promise. Just hold out a little longer…
