Designer Devirginizing

posted by Carlye at 4:12 pm.

I’m officially a lady.

Well, technically, i’ve been a lady since my bat mitzvah seven years ago, but now, i’m officially a lady.

yesterday, something big happened: i bought my first Diane Von Furstenberg dress.

If you’re a dude and have no idea what i’m talking about, i understand. If you’re a chick and have no idea what i’m talking about, lame; get to know DVF’s wrap dresses immediately as they’re probably all you will be wearing when you, too, become a lady.

it’s black, it’s strapless, it has pockets and it’s perfect.
ahhhhhhh.

I was surprised when the obnoxious girl next to me at The Coffee Bean in LA had CSS as her ringtone.

Now, I know why she had it — they’re in the new iPod commercial for the iPod Touch.

Boo.

LA Night Two: Dr. Martin

caught between a rock and a hardass place

i have no idea what this is, but the colors are pretty cool

every time i look at this photo, i get weezer stuck in my head.

img_9950.jpg

We went shopping at Kitson — that place where all those celebrities shop — and i wound up spending the majority of my time there on the phone with my brother talking about The Wood Brothers. Everything they sell there is so….desperately trendy. I mean, plastic gem-encrusted bracelets? Multi-colored ankle boots? Shiny, disco-ball dresses? It definitely had the aura of, “If i spend $78 on this plastic bangle, i’ll totally be cool.” Bizarre.

(We spent twice as long in American Apparel. mmm deep v’s.)

The Ivy was there, too. Paparazzi were abounding, but we never found out for who. I got a lot of weird looks, which I only realized a block later was probably because I, too, had a gigantic camera on my shoulder.

(I officially missed my chance to become a vagina photographer. bum-o.)

here’s an optical denim illusion from the trip:

img_9959.jpg

spent the rest of the day driving to santa monica to shop at fancy-pants Fred Segal (only bought coffee) and the local goodwill (bought my new purse!).
after, we went to dinner at il forno caldo, the cutest fucking italian restaurant ever.

img_9986.jpg

we ate with a doctor named Martin who didn’t speak very good english. Apparently, he’s a crazy-good doctor from Germany (i think) who has worked in Swizerland (i think). He likes pasta and nice cars, but absolutely despises cameras.

i think we made him extremely uncomfortable.

erin doesn’t like prosciutto.
(found that out the hard way.)

for my photo class project. fingers crossed i don’t fail.

Home For Thanksgiving.

posted by Carlye at 11:01 am.

The older I get, the more I don’t understand my parents.

I’ve always assumed that it would be the opposite — we’d sit in a circle, talk about some fancy-named politician, and laugh like elitists while mixing and clinking the ice cubes of our scotch on the rocks against the glass.

Instead, it’s turned into a nag-fest. But, at least it’s all stemming from a neurotic overbearing love for me and my broski.

(I need to watch more Curb Your Enthusiasm. I completely forgot how jewish families work.)

LA Day Two: Getty It On

posted by Carlye at 11:34 pm.

day two. morningtime.
(it is way too fucking cold in champaign. brrrrrr.)

there’s almost no public transportation in LA, which is weird.
for a place that’s so concerned about organic food and greening efforts, it’s ridiculous that everyone wants the newest car and the nicest SUV, and uses them to drive everywhere.
hypocritical, hmm?

urth caffe for breakfast.
we secretly thought that because entourage was filmed there, we’d see adrien grenier.
(we didn’t.)
but we saw tiny pies!

Los Angeles: The Beginning.

posted by Carlye at 9:24 am.

i told my friend last night, “if i don’t wake up in 20 minutes, kill me.”

death is coming my way.
none of the work i needed to finish has been finished. i have a paper due at 5 (haven’t started) and need to get these photos up (haven’t started), so i’ll be tryin’ my best to multitask.

fucking alarm clock.

Gillman, after (successfully?) overcoming pneumonia.

img_9561.jpg

i rented a crazy intense camera from the art & design building at school.
it makes thingz look fun!

img_9587.jpg

the only good part about airports are traveling walkways and cinnabon.
(well, and loudly asking gillman, “did you ever get those tuberculosis test results?” as she coughed her way through a flight)

img_9664.jpg

like dog tags…but not.

img_9670.jpg

dinner, animal style.
(i had better pictures, but they’re missing. if only you could share in our caitlin cooper glory. sorry, folks.)

img_0271.jpg

i once got peed on at the canopy club.
it was while i was in front row at an umphrey’s mcgee show, and the drunk high school kid behind me couldn’t handle himself with all the gatorade and shitty vodka flowing through his veins, and he whipped it out and peed on me.
now, i’m not technically saying that this counts as atmosphere…but it’s a hell of a lot different than the snoozefest crowd at this show.
of montreal was fantastic as always, but you’d never know it by looking at the lifeless crowd.
for the most part, no one bobbed, no one wiggled, no one danced.
it was bright, it was clean, and it was running waaaay ahead of schedule.
three bands hustled in and out in two hours so that a skanky dance party could occur. and though this photo looks fist pump-tastic, it was only the superfans in the front.
moral of the story: canopy is better than other places, of montreal deserved a more energetic audience (because they’re amazing), and i don’t think i like getting urinated on.

1. pick any two cookies
2. pick an ice cream flavor
3. fork over only $1.50

Hold Your Horses

posted by Carlye at 12:29 am.

Fresh off the plane.
I can’t update the LA goodness yet (too much to do), but I will reformat all the photos tomorrow and make this place real shiny and fun.
Apologies on the no updates, it’ll never happen again.
Promise.

Anyway…
I came home to a box of Sony BMG CDs, five of which were Continuum Limited Edition two-disc sets. The bonus disc?
SIX LIVE SONGS.
and it includes an “I Don’t Need No Doctor” cover. ohmigosh.

so, let’s count it out:
1. continuum live disc.
2. just got back from the best vacation ever
3. my friend Laura from Venus Zine, who I interned with, is now the concert reviews editor!
4. i have ten shiny new vinyl records waiting to be played
5. the old editor of the buzz, erin scottberg wrote me a recommendation letter that might just solidify my dream summer in NYC

and to top it all off, we’re ending the cali-calorie binge with a nightcap at murphys.

photos soon, i promise.

Quick Bits From LAX

posted by Carlye at 3:35 pm.

i’m broke and paying a ton for internet, so here’s a quick update:

Alton from The Real World just helped Gillman pick out cheesy souvenirs in the airport gift shop and I’ve had more Coffee Bean and In N Our burger than I’d ever want, EVER.

I think that’s enough to hold you until after the plane ride.

xoxo,
carlye
