Would PETA approve of Fable II?

posted by nikki at 12:51 pm.

heroanddog_1280.jpg

So Kotaku posted an interview with Peter Molyneux (you know… the guy responsible for Fable II, releasing Oct. 21…), and in it he chats about the dog your Fable II character gets to have follow him or her around.

There’s nothing like a game that intentionally plays on your emotions. According to Molyneux, there’s really only one way to get rid of your dog if you don’t want it following you around all the time… and that’s to not heal it when it’s injured. Apparently they opted for this over simply allowing players to toggle the dog on or off.

An injured or sick dog will not just abandon you. It will crawl after you, and eventually it will catch up to you… sort of an in-game guilt trip. I like it. It’s a liberating idea that’s slightly disturbing at the same time. Not enough games have significant emotional consequences to your in-game actions… although it would be nice if there’s a less sadistic option at some point for going it alone.

I became fond of the first Fable, very quickly. It’s a fun environment to experiment in. I’ve gone from good to evil and back so many times, I’ve lost track. There aren’t many games out there that give you the choice between beating your wife to death or bring her a rose.. or between buying the local weapons shop or massacring the entire town. If Fable II manages to improve upon it, I’m going to be putting in a lot og hours on this one.

Madden 09 Pink Edition available this month only

posted by nikki at 10:13 am.

madden09pink.jpg

This will probably be the one and only time I have anything even remotely positive to say about a sports game… or, for that matter, EA… so pay attention. ;)

EA announced yesterday that they will be releasing a Madden 09 Pink edition, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which will be available exclusively at Target starting on October 5th, and will be sold for the duration of the month. The limited pink edition doesn’t have any new features (other than some spiffy pink cover art), but proceeds from the sales will contribute to a donation to the Deanna Favre HOPE Foundation.

Deanna Favre, wife of Madden NFL 09 cover athlete Brett Favre, founded the Deanna Favre HOPE Foundation after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 at the age of 35. The foundation is committed to helping underserved and underinsured women battling breast cancer.

The limited Pink edition of Madden 09 is available for the 360 and for the Wii at both Target.com and NFLshop.com.

Pre-order Notice: The Last Remnant

posted by nikki at 1:08 pm.

Coming soon to an XBOX 360 near you (and a little later, to the PS3, as well…) is Square-Enix’s next RPG, The Last Remnant.

The story of the game concerns “remnants”, mysterious and coveted ancient artifacts of vast magical power. These artifacts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and have been the cause of several wars. Central to the story is a boy named Rush, who is trying to rescue his kidnapped sister, Irina, only to find himself pulled directly into the global conflict as a result.

thelastremnant01.jpg thelastremnant02.jpg thelastremnant03.jpg thelastremnant04.jpg

Gameplay is said to be Turn/Command-based, and like several of Square-Enix’s more recent games, random encounters have been done away with. Players will also have the opportunity to command a team of soldiers in battles that can involve up to 70 enemies at once.

The game will be available November 20 for the 360. A PS3 release date has not yet been set.

Review: Infinite Undiscovery

posted by nikki at 11:46 am.

infintie.jpg

I’ll admit, I’ve been looking forward to this game… and I’m not exactly disappointed with it, but to be honest, I’m nowhere near as impressed as I thought I’d be, especially with it being a game coming from Square-Enix (though to be fair, they only published the game… it was actually developed by TriAce).

First the good points.

The story is engaging. The characters are likable. The environments are pretty, colorful, and varied enough that it’s not one of those annoying games where every dungeon looks the same. The gameplay, too, is mostly solid, if a bit hack-and-slash (not that there’s anything wrong with that… I actually enjoy it). It does have it’s issues, but more on that in a minute.

iu01.jpg

Infinite Undiscovery is the story of a boy named Cappel, who right off the bat is tossed into the local prison because he happens to bear a striking resemblance to a rebel leader by the name of Sigmund. Sigmund and his allies have been traveling the world, battling the Order of Chains, and dangerous group who seeks to enchain the moon for their own devious motives. Cappel is rescued by Aya, thinking that he actually is Sigmund, and even after realizing her mistake, she still drags him along with her to meet us with the rest of the Liberation Force.

I won’t spoil the plot for you, because it really is a decent story that’s entirely worth playing through… if you can tolerate the less likeable parts of the game.

The first of these is the voice acting. I’m not even going to beat around the bush here… it’s awful. Really awful. Not all of it. There are a few well-done voice-overs, but they’re few and far between.

The other thing that bugs me… even more than than bad acting sometimes, is that lip syncing is almost non-existent throughout the game. The dialog isn’t exactly great in a few place, either, but that at least is tolerable. But with the lip sync (or rather, lack thereof), after awhile you get the impression that they didn’t even make the attempt.

iu02.jpg

But realistically, bad voice acting isn’t exactly uncommon in games, and poor lip syncing can be ignored if you put in a little effort (especially if you mute the voices). Some things that are a little harder to tolerate are the sometimes bizarre motivations of the characters. Every once in awhile there’s a situation where it feels like they decided to skip a few key events in character development altogether and beat you over the head with one character’s feelings towards another with no explanation as to how we arrived at that point. Unfortunately, this occasionally carries over into the plot as a whole, as well.

As for the gameplay itself…

My first qualm is that it’s not always clear what your next goal is supposed to be. For example, you’ll finish a mission, and then wind up in whatever town or locale you’re supposed to be in, with only a very vague idea of where to head next. There are hints… but they’re easy to miss, because they’re often spoken aloud by one of your party members as you’re heading out into the world map. Sucks for you if a random monster jumps you right out of the gate, because you’ll never hear the hint, and as far as I’ve been able to find, there’s nothing in the menus that states your current goal (which is a real pain in the ass if you stop around 2 am to sleep, then attempt to pick it up two days later and have no memory of what the hell you were doing the last time you saved).

iu03.jpg

The second thing that annoyed me was the multiple party system. Or rather the way it’s managed. See, you don’t always have multiple parties… which is fine because sometimes it’s not a good thing to have twelve people running around doing their own thing. You really don’t have much control over the secondary parties when you do get to use them. There are also a number of characters that are only allowed in secondary parties… which really sucks, because a couple of them seem to be pretty damn effective mages, and it’d be nice to have that in the main party once in awhile. The choice of ranged fighters is kind of limited.

And finally, two comments on the menu…

1) It’s nested like crazy, so it’s hard to find anything quickly.
2) God help you if you need to use a recovery item during battle.

All in all, it’s not a bad game, but it’s by no means a great game. It’s also a little on the short side for an RPG (I made it through the first of two discs in under 9 hours, taking my sweet time, and the second disc, at the beginning anyway, seems very cutscene heavy, limiting actual play time). The story is a good one, though, and there are some genuinely funny and emotional moments along the way.

My ratings on this game:

iu04.jpg

Story: 8/10 - Good plot, engaging events, but occasionally predictable.

Characters: 5/10 - There are a few memorable ones, and even some great ones. The villains, unfortunately, are rather weak, though, and there isn’t a whole lot of development of the main protagonists… even the ones closely tied to Cappel. I think this largely stems from the fact that there are just so many (18 playable characters can only get so much screen time for backstory).

Gameplay: 6/10 - In general, it plays very similar to Kingdom Hearts. Run up to an enemy, and button mash. But some of the things are extremely awkward. “Connecting” with other party members to control their special ability and give them a target, for example, is almost ineffective during battle because it’s such a pain to activate. The menu, too, as I mentioned is a challenge to work with.

Overall: 6.5/10 - It’s decent… worth at least one playthrough… but forgettable, which is a pity, because it had so much potential.

The price cuts, they are a comin’

posted by nikki at 2:07 pm.

cheap.png

Apparently I wasn’t paying attention yesterday, and completely missed the announcement that Microsoft will slash the price of all 360 models by another $50 starting tomorrow. This means that the Elite will be dropping to $399.99 and the 60GB model to $299.99.

More importantly, though, this means that the hard drive-less 360 Arcade will be down to a scant $199.99, making it $50 cheaper than the Wii. Given that you can pick up a used or refurbished 20GB hard drive for around $40 and shipping, it puts it right on par with the Wii.

Of course it never fails. I bought my 360 Arcade (well, actually it was a refurbished Core system, not that there’s a whole lot of difference) used less than 6 months ago for $200, and added on a hard drive. Sure, it came with something like 12 games, but now I could get a new console for around the same price. Ah well. As long as the thing keeps working, I’ll be happy.

Now, if Sony would just put out a $200 PS3…

In Fable II, for XBOX 360, you create and mold your character from childhood into adulthood, your decisions affecting their personality, reputation and appearance. The game consists of a vast open world in which you have the choice of following the main story line, raising a family, or simply heading off on your own.

Everything I’ve seen about this RPG looks amazing, and the early previews have been very favorable. The game releases on October 21, and is available as both 360 Standard and 360 Limited Edition Editions.

The Limited Edition includes as bonus DVD, bonus downloadable content (including an additional dungeon and weapon), a collectable figure, five collectable cards, and a 48-hour Live Gold trial card.

Final Fantasy XIII on the 360? Really?

posted by nikki at 5:06 pm.

ffxiii360.jpg

So, E3 started today, and there’s oodles of live blogging going on around the net. This morning, though, Square Enix held a press conference, and of special interest is the fact that Final Fantasy XIII will NOT be a PS3 exclusive.

Yeah, you read that right… FF13 is going multi-platform and will be released on the 360, as well. According to producer Yoshinori Kitase, Square-Enix will first finish the PS3 version of the game for Japan, followed by the overseas localizations, and then will begin development on the 360 version. Interestingly enough, the 360 version may not be released in Japan. Whether or not XIII will make use of XBOX Live in any way is still undecided.

Versus XIII, however, will be remaining exclusive to the PS3.

Microsoft has finally confirmed XBOX 360 Pro price cut

posted by nikki at 11:54 am.

360pro.jpg

Surprising absolutely nobody, seeing as the news has been floating around all over the net for weeks now, Microsoft did indeed annouce today that the XBOX 360 Pro (20GB) is getting a $50 price cut, dropping from $349.99 to $299.99.

While suppiles last, that is. Like the 20GB model of the PS3, the 20GB XBOX 360 is being phased out. The sku will be replaced sometime in August with a new 60GB model for the Pro’s old price point of $349.99.

Prices for the Arcade and Elite models will remain firmly at $279.99 and $449.99, respectively.

To be perfectly honest, I’m not a big fan of multiple skus for the same console… especially since the primary difference is just storage space. But if you’ve been holding off on buying a 360 because the Pro was too expensive, and the Arcade’s lack of a hard drive didn’t appeal to you, now’s the time to break out the credit cards. Head over to Kotaku for Microsoft’s full press release.

Also, today’s Target ad (page 7) shows that the store is offering a $25 gift card with the purchase of the reduced-price XBOX 360 Pro. Circuit City’s ad (page 21) offers a $30 gift card with the purchase of the console and NCAA Football 09. And Best Buy’s ad (page 32) is offering the console essentially for free when you buy the advertised Samsung 40″ 1080p LCD HDTV for $1399.97.

If the rumors are true, July 13 will be a good day.

I’m sure just about anyone who follows gaming news on teh intrawebz has already heard the rumors and speculation regarding a price drop for the XBOX 360 Pro. Microsoft has yet to comment, but the evidence that it’s more than rumor has been steadily building over the past few weeks with leaked fliers and internal memos from retailers advertising a new low price of $299.99 for the console, effective on Sunday, July 13.

JoyStiq recently added an internal corporate memo sent in by an anonymous GameStop manager to the collection… they’ve even assembled a nice little gallery of the various pieces of evidence.

For those of us who already have a 360, here’s to hoping that Sony will soon follow suit in order to compete, and drop the price of the PS3 to more affordable levels. I wanna get me one before the next millenium.
