Amazon vs. Gamestop?

posted by nikki at 10:01 am.

So maybe you’ve already heard… Amazon.com is trying to nudge their way into the used game market. They’ve started a trade-in service of their own to compete with other game re-sellers, like EB Games/Gamestop.

And it looks like they’re off to a good start. Amazon is offering trade-in prices that are higher than Gamestop’s average. They’ll also give you an additional 10% off on future game and game accessories purchases, and they even pay for the postage. So what’s the catch? Well, for one, you don’t get your cash instantly… you have to wait until they receive and accept your games. For another… you don’t actually get cash. You get an Amazon gift card applied to your account.

Now for me, that doesn’t particularly matter. On the rare occasion I trade in a game, it’s always put towards buying a different one… and I shop on Amazon constantly. Believe me, I have no trouble at all spending an Amazon gift card.

On the other hand, I know there are a lot of gamers out there who’d sooner have something they can spend anywhere they want as soon as they dump their old games. And it seems that Gamestop’s CEO is thinking much the same thing (although Gamestop’s investors may have a different opinion… Gamestop’s stock dropped 13% yesterday after Amazon’s announcement. Toys ‘R Us, too, is testing the trade-in waters.).

Today’s online deals for frugal gamers

posted by nikki at 12:26 pm.

My regular intensive scouring of the internet (read “killing time this morning before I headed off to the office”) turned up some pretty decent deals on some of the more expensive gaming hardware. If you’re planning to buy, better act quick, though… most of them have time limits.

Dealsclick.com is offering as their Deal of the Day a reconditioned Xbox 360 Elite for $239.99 + $4.99 shipping. They’ve also got Rock Band Special Edition (PS3 version) for $79.99 coming up as a Deal of the Hour at 3pm.

Buy.com has Xbox 360 Wireless Network adaptors for $69.99 ($30.00 off) and free shipping.

Dell has 80GB PS3s on sale for $339.99 and the Uncharted 2 Limited Edition 160GB PS3 bundle for $424.99. You can also grab a 2000 Series PSP Slim for $144.49.

Club Nintendo!

posted by nikki at 2:10 pm.

And about time.

Nintendo launched Club Nintendo for North America today. So what does this mean? The “club” is more of a rewards program, in which gamers register their Nintendo-published games (and certain WiiWare titles) and fill out surveys ‘n such to receive Coins, which can then be cashed in on the site for prizes.

So what can you get? Lots of nifty stuff if you’re a DS owner… not so much for us Wii people yet. You can check out the current rewards here.

The sites seems to be getting slammed pretty hard right now, so don’t be shocked if the registration process doesn’t go quickly for you.

In my efforts to make your holiday shopping a little easier (at least for the gamers on your list…) here’s another round of gaming discounts.

Today’s Amazon GoldBox deals feature Wii games. The deal of the day is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for 48% off, and lighting deals will be popping up every few hours.

You’ll find more Wii-related discounts over in the 15 Days, 15 Deals section… both games and accessories today.

Also, GameFly is offering holiday discounts on on gift certificates, if you would prefer to let that special someone choose their own games.

I’ll be sure to let you all know if I find any more.

I love the holidays

posted by nikki at 2:31 pm.

I really do. Not because of all the Christmas spirit and family gatherings and whatnot… because of the shopping. You don’t often see better deals than during the period between the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas (except for maybe the after-Christmas clearance sales…).

On that note, today marks the beginning of Amazon’s 15 Days, 15 Deals promotion, and the video game section is off to a promising start. Today’s deal features Guitar Hero World Tour (Guitar Kit version… the game and one guitar) for about 40% off the regular price, your choice of system.

14 more deals will be coming, so keep an eye out.

Video Game Deals today in Amazon’s Gold Box

posted by nikki at 10:17 am.

Amazon is having a games day over in the GoldBox. It’s looking like it’s going to be an XBOX 360 kind of day this time around.

The deal of the day is Midnight Club: Los Angeles for $39.99. The day’s first lightning deal is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for $29.98 (50% off the current list price). Five more deals will be making themselves known throughout the day.

Also, if you’re in the market for a new 360 Elite, today’s offer in Amazon’s Video Games Countdown to Black Friday is a free copy of The Last Remnant and 4000 Live Point card when you buy the 360 holiday bundle (which comes with Lego Star Wars and Kung Fu Panda) for $399.99.

Guitar Hero Wii deal over at Amazon

posted by nikki at 10:56 am.

frontman.jpg

Amazon.com has a pretty sweet deal on Guitar Hero for Wii today.

You can snag yourself 2 Frontman Wireless Guitars (for Wii) for $20 when you buy the software only versions of either Guitar Hero Aerosmith, or Guitar Hero 3 for Wii.

Regular list price on Frontmans runs around $49.99, so getting them for $10 each is a pretty hefty discount… so if you’re a Wii owner who passed on Legends of Rock or Aerosmith in favor of World Tour, or are in need of an extra Guitar or two, you might want to go check this one out. And since it’s one-day only, you might want to hurry. :)
