Today’s rumor, courtesy of Bloomberg Japan (via Kotaku, and about six dozen other sites), has to do with this year’s upcoming E3 and the possibility that Nintendo will announce that the DS and the DS Lite have mated to produce some sort of illicit offsrping.
Nintendo has yet to comment on the veracity of the rumor that there’s a new design for the DS in the pipeline, but it certainly has gaming websites buzzing. Nearly every other gaming blog and news site I frequent has info on it, and as a few of them have already pointed out, it’s not completely impossible (especially since the PSP has been outselling the DS in Japan by a pretty significant margin lately).
So that begs the question… what might they change about the DS?

The DS vs. PSP numbers in Japan have been fairly roller-coastery, neither of them has been able to consistently hold onto the top spot. Zoom out a bit and count the Wii in and Japan has no idea what the hell it is doing console wise. Though I suppose that is a sign of a healthy market and healthy competition.
Nintendo did end up flatly denying the story. But they did the same thing the day before they announced the DS Lite, so who knows?
